Devil in Ohio episode 1 recap – the premiere explained

September 3, 2022

This recap of Episode 1 of the Netflix Devil in Ohio limited series, “Broken Fall,” contains spoilers.

Devil in Ohio, based on the bestselling book, has such an intriguing premise. So fascinating that it’s surprising Netflix hasn’t marketed this more. It is possible that the launch of the LOTR series scared them a little. Anyway, let’s recap episode 1.

Devil in Ohio summary of episode 1

Episode 1 opens with spooky music and wrestling sounds as a young girl runs away from a house in the middle of the night. She sprints through the cultivated fields, seemingly terrified of what she is fleeing. She throws a blade before forcing a car to stop to retrieve it.

The next day, Dr. Suzanne Mathis is alerted to the same girl, who now resides in her hospital. Suzanne has a typical family life, with a small foster family and a loving husband.

Suzanne takes stock of the young girl in the hospital; she has a strange injury. Eventually, the girl wakes up and she is escorted around the hospital, looking dazed. A nurse tries to take a blood test, but the young girl kicks things off, forcing Suzanne to intervene.

Suzanne introduces herself as the psychiatrist on the ward and instantly tries to connect with the young girl. She doesn’t speak, but she lays her head on Suzanne’s shoulder. This has an impact on Suzanne; she walks to the bathroom and takes a deep breath. In the evening, Suzanne looks at photos of the young girl’s strange injuries. She is already emotionally invested.

Meanwhile, the girl wakes up in the middle of the night repeating the word “no” and slapping herself. It became apparent early on that she was part of a religious cult.

The next day, Suzanne sees a strange man looking for the young girl at the hospital. He’s the sheriff of Amon County. Suzanne tells him he needs a court order, so he leaves.

Social services arrive at the hospital, but Suzanne is worried about where the young girl will be transferred. She has been informed that the only suitable foster family available in their county is her family.

Suzanne asks the young girl more questions; where she is from, who she is and her parents. No response is returned, but the girl looks frightened when she hears about the sheriff. As Suzanne walks away, the young girl reveals her name – Mae.

The end

And then the first twist we all saw coming, Suzanne brings Mae home, and she’s going to stay with Jules in her room. Suzanne’s husband, Peter, worries that she has brought Mae home, but Suzanne doesn’t want her transferred to another county and wants to make sure she has a good family.

Jules is quickly spooked by Mae in the bathroom when she suddenly appears behind her. Mae struggles with the usual social niceties. And then, at dinnertime, Mae gives a strange blessing before eating.

Before Mae falls asleep, she thanks Suzanne for her kindness. At the end of the episode, Mae looks at her in the mirror to reveal a satanic symbol carved into her back – it’s the strange wound. She smiles in the mirror and says “you deserve it”.
