How Deacon Phillippe was cast in Never Have I Ever

There are a few new additions to the Never Have I Ever cast in Season 3, but arguably none are more valuable than Deacon Phillippe, son of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe.

As reported by Variety, showrunner Mindy Kaling revealed that “she cast Phillippe after her close friend Witherspoon told her he had an interest in acting.”

“We were breaking up the season and there was this role that seemed to be perfect for Deacon. He’s obviously so talented and he’s handsome, and we just thought he’d be awesome and he was excited to come and do it. He’s just such a well-behaved kid. He’s so talented, he’s so funny, and he fits in perfectly with the cast. The cast and crew loved him and it was special to have him. — Mindy Kaling, via Variety.

Kaling noted that “He’s such a humble kid and he just wants to learn and he was raised by two very successful actors. [so] he’s not suspicious or anything” adding how “He just came with this open mind and was excited.”

Fellow showrunner Lang Fisher also admitted that she was immediately impressed with the young actor after his first table reading.

“He was great, and we were like ‘Come aboard!’ It’s the first thing he’s ever done, but he was so professional. He has just been brought up as a wonderful young man. He came on set really prepared and he did a great job. — Lang Fisher, via Variety.

Deacon’s father, Ryan Phillippe, reacted to his son’s big breakthrough on Never Have I Ever Season 3, telling Extra TV, “It’s really exciting. Being a parent is so rewarding to see him at this point in his life where he’s about to launch his music career and he’s doing some acting and going to college. It’s really a lot of fun.

Kaling hints at wanting Ava Phillippe to join another project

In an interview with Extra TV, Kaling explained how she would like to work with Deacon’s sister, Ava Phillippe, on an upcoming project.

While talking about the experience of working with Deacon, Kaling said, “He’s so funny, so talented…He’s obviously, like, very handsome, and we had a great time with him on set, and he’s like his mother where after wrapping, he sent me a handwritten note, thanking me for being on set…”

“You could just say Reese is his mother… You’re just like, ‘Oh, you’re a good person… I can’t imagine anyone saying bad things about you… You’re one of them. ‘” – Mindy Kaling, via Extra TV.

The showrunner then added how “He and his sister are both like that… And so it was awesome having him on set and he was really cute.”

Curious about the comment, Extra TV’s Katie Krause went on to ask, “You mentioned her sister, so I’m just curious. You put it in ‘Never Have I Ever.’ Could you put Ava in “Legally Blonde 3″?”

Kaling responded with his usual [deserved] bravado, “Look, I think I can do anything, and if that’s something she wanted to do, what a joy to have her in there.”

Fingers crossed, we may see a Kaling-Philippe connection on screen again in a future project.
