Cowboy Bebop summary of season 1, episode 6
It turns out that Faye may not have slept with Spike because she has an eye on the sultry mechanic. Jet thinks she’s trying to rip them off, but their ship is grounded for repairs. He tells Spike to go get a salary while he searches for a role. He also tells Faye to keep an eye on the sauce boat and make sure she’s working. As soon as Faye walks up to her, the engine is sweaty, dirty, and stripped down in a black A-shirt. She admires Faye’s new “scam” gun but shows him the tattoo on her arm of a beautiful woman about to lick a gun. Does she ask if Jet is her boss? Boyfriend? She wants to know, and Faye doesn’t tell her either. He just asked to watch her, so that she doesn’t steal anything, she jokes. There is nothing to steal from this ship, she told Faye. Well, other than Faye, she jokes.
Damn, this is a great out of the box line.
And it worked. Ms. Mechanic and Faye hook up, and she confesses to him that it’s her first orgasm (remember, she hasn’t remembered for two years).
Spike then heads to town and searches for Dr. Londes, their next bounty. When he walks in, the artificial intelligence talks to Spike on a series of televisions all over the office. This leads him to a chair he sits on and glasses that he puts on. He enters a virtual reality that puts him in the middle of the street with Julia. She warns him that Vicious is coming for him. A fraction of a second later, she is hit in the head by her husband and his gang of thugs. Spike wakes up and runs out of the office. He sees Julia again. He takes her by the hand and walks out so she doesn’t get shot. But, it is the same illusion, over and over. Because Jet walks into the office, all the screens are broken, Spike is still in the chair.
It turns out that everything is just a trap. Dr. Londes’ bounty was just the carrot, and now this VR system is the emotionally abusive stick. The AI is trying to capture Spike’s consciousness, says the man who created it who showed up at the office just before Jet. So Julia dies again and Spike wakes up again. Every time he does, he runs out of the office down the street of a town that looks like a cheaper version of WandaVision. Anytime Spike makes Julia happy, he has a better chance of survival. Any time Julia lets her anxiety take over, Spike is in danger.
From the third go-around, Spike and Julia are in a shootout in Tombstone. But even though Spike continues to protect her, Julia continues to crush his heart with mean things like he’s not a protector and worse than Vicious. She demands that he let her go! “Alright,” he said.
Shot of Jet running his space dumpster from ship to rocky world where signal is coming from Spike’s VR control. With Faye’s “scam” gun, they blew up the mainframe and cut the connection, saving Spike’s life. Later, after Spike wakes up to the smell of noodles freshly made for him by Jet, he asks if he remembers anything. Spike tells him no. But it turns out after he said, “Okay, I’m going to go,” he continued with, “I’ll take you with me.” As he grabs her hand, he turns the corner and Vicious is there with a gun. He puts a bullet in Spike’s head.
The man will never abandon Julia.
