Copenhagen Cowboy Season 1 Episode 4 Episode 4 recap – how is Miroslav connected to Miu? first appeared on Ready Steady Cut.

This Nicolas Winding Refn Netflix Copenhagen Cowboy Season 1 Episode 4 series recap, “From Mr. Chiang With Love,” contains spoilers.

What is Miu? And by that, I don’t mean she’s an angel or an alien or anything like that. I mean what function does it fulfill in a narrative context? She’s the protagonist, I guess, but only in the sense that we’ve spent the most time with her. His story and intentions are as unclear as those of the others. But in this story, she is the symbol of something; righteous anger, perhaps, an avatar of the oppressed rising up against their oppressors, or good against evil. But what she is more than anything is an exhibitor. Wherever she goes, either literally – as with Rosella or the Dragon Palace – or literally – as upon seeing Cimona’s spirit in Nicklas’ house – exposes the darkness it hides. In an ever-changing kaleidoscopic dreamscape, she is reality in its purest form.

Copenhagen Cowboy Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

That’s, I guess, why Miu deals so easily with Nicklas, who had been built up over the past three episodes as the show’s villain. She is above the basic logistical concerns of the narrative; it exists outside the classical narrative structure. She is an anomaly, an “other,” something from another world in human form. Many would see an antagonist defeated so quickly and easily as a betrayal of basic storytelling principles, and in most shows that would be the case, but not, I think, in a show like this.

I see Miu massaging Mr. Chiang’s temples and negotiating the return of Hulda’s daughter, and I see Nicolas Winding Refn answer the question of what might happen if a character replaces the story in which they exist. Negotiating with someone like Chiang, a character like Miu wouldn’t have the advantage of power. Here she does. Even when she’s indebted to Chiang, does anyone think she’s really in danger?

Thanks to Miroslav, a lawyer with a connection to Miu’s past and several of the deals we’ve already witnessed, we get a more explicit narrative thread tying things together. But at this point we hardly need it. Miu is once again moved to a new location, placed among new people, and given a slightly new purpose related to the previous one. It’s another illegal gig that leads to more depth and weirdness, like everything in a Refn production always does. More and more, the details are less and less important.

Nicklas, defeated and maimed, remains Miu’s closest analogue, a sort of dark opposite, once again outside the standard structure, once again endowed with a supernatural quality. While he remains more or less alive in “From Mr. Chiang With Love,” his reconstruction is framed as a resurrection, a much more charged and powerful word, much more in keeping with the idea of him as darkness at the Miu light.
