Copenhagen Cowboy Season 1 Episode 3 Recap – How Does Chiang Control Hulda?

This recap of the Nicolas Winding Refn Netflix Copenhagen Cowboy Season 1 Episode 3 series, “Dragon Palace,” contains spoilers.

Appearances can be deceiving. A family home could be a secret sex trafficking operation. A Chinese restaurant might be hiding a body-chomping pig farm used by an underground fight club owner to dispose of corpses. You never know, and Copenhagen Cowboy, in another regular and metaphor-rich outing, makes sure you don’t know. That’s part of the problem.

Copenhagen Cowboy Season 1 Episode 3 Recap

On one level, “Dragon Palace” is almost a reworking of the first two episodes, with the titular restaurant instead of Rosella’s place and Mr. Chiang instead of Rosella and André. As before, news of Miu’s “gifts” spreads and wins her favor. As before, a veneer of legitimacy obscures a seedy underbelly. As before, the pigs. Time is a cycle, not a line.

Miu renaming herself Cimona as part of her new identity must matter. As of now, the late Cimona is the only connection between Miu and the killer Nicklas, though the two will cross paths sooner or later seems inevitable. Remember Miu wandering the rooms of Rosella’s house, taking moments to stretch and convulse; it’s not hard to imagine Nicklas dreaming in the same way, touched by something strange and quirky.

The difference, I suppose, is that Rosella had no proof of Miu’s powers, and when she did, it terrified her. Hulda, however, has seen first-hand proof of this, or at least what looks a lot like it. We don’t have to take the show at its word. Through Chiang, Miu sees visions of her past that prompt her to possess Hulda’s daughter. The stage is set; more victims, more revenge to be enacted by Miu, who becomes less of a prophetess and more of an avenging angel, wandering from place to place, performing miracles and righting wrongs.

Through Hulda, Chiang, and one of the dead pigs from the first, the show creates a more explicit plot connection between Miu and Nicklas (her family sells the pigs). The building is a maze of memories that Miu can feel, including many of Cimona. Copenhagen Cowboy is still deliberately coy with backstory and motivations – aside from an essential sense of moral good – but it’s clear enough that there’s something about Miu’s reputation, an otherworldly, ethereal quality. . The visual patterns still do most of the work, but behind the garish lighting and outlandish compositions, the shape of a story unmistakably begins to emerge.
