We recap the Netflix Horror anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities season 1, episode 7, “The Viewing,” which contains spoilers and the ending.

The seventh installment of Cabinet of curiosities by Guillermo Del Toro is a fun tribute to the B Horror Movies made famous in the 70s. When it comes to reproducing the magic of B movies, everything is on point, from the cinematography to the cheesy music to the monster CGI. “The Viewing” is set in the late ’70s and opens with four characters who have responded to a mysterious guest’s invitation to the Sandpiper House. All four are celebrities in their respective fields and all four have made late night television appearances. Charlotte (Charlyne Yi) is an astrophysicist who studies the existence of extraterrestrials. Randall (Eric Andre) is a well-known musical genius. Guy Landon (Steve Agee) is a talented author, while Targ Reinhard (Michel Therriault) is considered an extraordinary researcher. The rich host of the group, Lionel Lassiter (Pierre Weller), and his companion, Dr Zahra (Sophie Boutella), engaging in occasional drug use before the arrival of the four guests.

A mysterious driver with a cool 70s mustache, Hector (Saad Siddiqui) takes the group to Sandpiper House, where they are to spend an unexpected evening. At home, everything seems to die out from the start. Each guest notices their favorite drink ready for them on the round table. When the host shows up, he offers to share some very expensive whiskey with the group believed to have survived World War II. Randall is the only one worried about giving himself up, suggesting the musician has been sober for some time. Later, Lionel offers his guests cocaine which he mixes with what appears to be gold dust. Slowly, Randall and the rest of the group give in and become increasingly intoxicated as the night wears on.

During the evening, the guests discuss their degrees and their respective lives. Randall does not know if his next album will be a success. Dr. Zahra reveals that she was the private doctor of a very dangerous man who nearly killed her. Lionel explains that he has a habit of collecting unusual items and reveals that he invited everyone there due to their unique talents, especially Charlotte as she is a scientist studying the possibility of life. extraterrestrial.

After putting the four characters very high on his white powder, Lionel takes them to a separate room and shows them the real reason for which he invited them. It hosted a strange looking rock that seems to be out of this world. Charlotte and Targ are fascinated by it. Randall is mostly annoyed that he can’t smoke in the room, while Guy shows little interest in the item. When they ask Lionel to explain what it is, he simply states that he has no idea and hoped the four would be able to figure it out.

The group doesn’t have much time to argue, as the space rock starts making a high-pitched noise before anything starts coming out of it. After Targ’s face melts, Guy shouts “It’s probing me”, before his head explodes. Dr. Zahra, in a trance-like state, touches the alien monster and his body melts horribly. Charlotte and Randall flee to avoid the same fate. However, Lionel, still in shock, sits there helplessly as the alien turns into a goo and submerges him in it before transforming him into a humanoid monster. Poor Hector tries to shoot the now humanoid creature who is also able to speak, but meets an equally gruesome fate.

In the end, Charlotte and Randall have arrived at the car and are getting out. Still, the monster Lionel/Alien hybrid is still on the loose, and the final shot shows him reaching the city, where he’ll likely wreak a lot of havoc.
