Are there real Nazis in Hunters season 2? We explore the Nazi characters depicted in the Prime Video Hunters series to see if they are based on real people from history. This article contains spoilers.

The First video conspiratorial drama series Hunters is back for a second and final season. The show centers on a ragtag team of assassins who hunt down and kill Nazis in 1970s America. This fight for justice means coming face to face with the Nazi criminals who escaped death or all retribution after the war. This series may be a kind of alternate history fantasy, but it relies on historical facts and historical figures to tell its outlandish story. So are there any real Nazis in Hunters season 2, and what does the show tell us about these despicable individuals?

adolf hitler

The second season centers on the hunt for the most hated man of all time, the Fuhrer of the Nazi Party himself. He is reluctantly remembered as the dictator who started World War II and orchestrated the Holocaust, the genocide of millions of Jews and many millions of other victims. In HuntersHitler is played by Udo Kier and is still very much alive. Although it is believed that in real life he died on April 30, 1945. After learning of Germany’s impending defeat and Mussolini’s execution, Hitler shot himself in the head.

Hitler’s remains were later burned and only his dental bridges were later found. Surprisingly, there is very little other evidence to support Hitler’s death other than a few eyewitness reports, so a conspiracy theory quickly formed. There were rumors that he fled to Argentina with his wife. Hunters works wholeheartedly with this conspiracy theory, using it as the main focus of the second season.

Eva Braun-Hitler

Lena Olin plays Adolf Hitler’s wife, Eva Braun, also known as Colonel. She acts as the leader of the Fourth Reich, an attempted resurgence of the Nazi Party in modern times. Eva wants to continue Adolf’s legacy, while learning from his past mistakes. In the series, Eva clashes with her husband and they have an ongoing, bitter rivalry. Eva was a real person, who married Adolf just days before her own death. It is believed that she committed suicide alongside Adolf Hitler in the bunker. It is believed that Eva bit off a cyanide capsule and her body was burned along with Adolf’s. Just like the Führer, Hunters pursues the conspiracy theory that she did not kill herself and escaped from Berlin to South America with her husband.

Klaus Rheinhart

In season two, the Hunters capture a Nazi financier named Klaus Rhinehart, who allegedly helped Adolf and Eva Hitler escape Berlin and get to Argentina. They hope that Klaus will lead them directly to the Hitlers, but when questioned he denies knowing their actual location. In real life, there was no Klaus Rhinehart, but there was a German called Klaus Reinhardt, who was the son of Fritz Reinhardt, a Nazi party official. Fritz was also State Secretary in the German Ministry of Finance during Hitler’s reign. He survived the war and although he spent a few years in prison, he lived the rest of his life as a free man in West Germany.

Joseph Mengele

In episode four, “The Fare”, hunters track down two Nazi sympathizers in a small village in Argentina. George, Lonny, and Roxy interrogate these criminals in their antique store, but they find no Nazis hiding inside the store. Well-wishers admit they were harboring Josef Mengele, the Angel of Death, but he has since died. Josef Mengele was a real Nazi, who also survived the war. He lived a long life thereafter without any retribution. The SS officer and doctor is infamous for performing gruesome experiments on prisoners at the Auschwitz concentration camp. He fled to Buenos Aires after the war and later died in Brazil aged 67.

Guillaume Zuchs

Al Pacino’Meyer Offerman’s character is reduced to flashback scenes only in the second season, as he was killed off in the first season finale. The big deal being that Meyer was actually Nazi doctor Wilhelm ‘The Wolf’ Zuchs. In real life, there was a Nazi Einsatzkommando (death squad) leader called Wilhelm Fuchs who may have inspired the character in Hunters. The two Nazis share a similar sounding name and not much else in reality. Although the story of Wilhelm Zuchs in Hunters is more than likely inspired by a real life incident.

There are a few other Nazis who are introduced in season two of Hunters, but they don’t appear to be based on or inspired by any real people. These include: Rolf von Klaussen, The Crow and Viktor Frondheim. In conclusion, it would seem that the majority of the characters in the series are based on or inspired by real Nazis. The creators may warp and twist the history books, but they try to maintain some authenticity even in the fantasy exploitation genre, which adds a bit of realism to an otherwise rather wacky storyline.
