On Friday, September 2, 2022, Amazon released one of the most ambitious series of all time. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a prequel to LOTR movies; this seems unprecedented, even with the mass content production of 100 universes per year.
However, with anticipation comes negativity. Predictably, the previous version drew negative reviews, which is no surprise when millions of people watch it.
There are many reasons to watch The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and ignore negative reviews:
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – 7 reasons to ignore negative reviews
Reason 1: Exam bombings happen all the time
Unfortunately, for various reasons, review bombing is a new trend in the entertainment world. Groups of people coordinate negative review posts on IMDB, RT, and Metacritic in the ratings section to present a meager score. However, he is so weak that he often becomes unbelievable. Strong sections of fandoms (some of which may be considered toxic) see this as some version of a protest. The usual sign of a review bombardment is the chasm between very positive and negative reviews (i.e. a massive increase in 5-star reviews, but on the other hand, a massive increase in 1-star reviews) .
There is a strong admission in the industry that the bomb review needs to be resolved. However, so far, there are few answers to combat this trend.
Reason 2: Tolkien’s domain is very valuable
There’s a reason we’ve only had two trilogies and a few video games so far. Tolkien’s estate is very valuable, made up of rich and valued materials. Tolkien purists want to hold adaptations accountable, ensuring that canon is upheld and the story is portrayed correctly. There would always be a negative angle with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power because Amazon couldn’t buy all the rights.
There will be some nitpicking here and there, but it’s exciting and comforting to know that Tolkien Estate co-produced the series with Amazon.
Reason 3: We need more The Lord of the Rings stories
While the story is rich and beautiful, that doesn’t mean we can’t have more stories in this universe as long as the right people are behind it with the right intentions. While this will no doubt mean many gaps will be filled and possible universe expansions, one can only hope that the creators will respect the constructed world. If not, there will undoubtedly be problems.
Reason 4: Outside of review bombing, reviews are positive
If you look beyond the bombardment of high-volume reviews, the reaction to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was positive. Viewers and critics can understand the budget and effort behind the series just from the first two episodes.
Reason 5: competition creates a divide
HBO and Amazon created a war with ratings and viewership. With Dragon House and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power by releasing weekly episodes two days apart, there will be comparisons and fans arguing which series is better. The Lord of the Rings is no stranger to competition. He collided Harry Potter with the original trilogy.
But, there’s no reason audiences can’t enjoy both – Dragon House and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is event television, and we should appreciate it.
Reason 6: FOMO
If you are an avid viewer of TV series, why would you miss this series? If you were one of those people like me, who don’t look game of thrones initially, and had to catch up knowing the spoilers, then you’ll know that specific fear of missing out. Of course, you might not be so worried if you are a casual viewer of TV series.
Reason 7: Are you a big fan of the LOTR trilogy? Give it a chance!
Whether The Lord of the Rings movies are your all-time favourites, I see no reason not to dive into this series. There will be nostalgia, world-building, and plot context provided on a micro level. It’s a fan’s dream to see this story come to fruition with such financial support and production. And with Season 2 greenlit, there will be no escaping the marketing! Give it a chance!
There you have it, 7 reasons to ignore the negative reviews on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power! Do you have other reasons to attract those who may have been absorbed by the bombing? Comments below.
You can watch this series with a Prime Video subscription.
