When the Berlin Wall unexpectedly falls, imprisoned former assassin Kleo is freed and wonders why she was exposed, arrested and betrayed, and who is behind the plot against her. Here are 5 reasons why you should watch Cleo on Netflix.
1. The premise
It seems that at the heart of the story, there is a big mystery that people will want to see solved. Kleo seems desperate to uncover the truth behind her betrayal, and from what we see in the trailer, she’s a force to be reckoned with. We all love a good revenge story, and Kleo seems ready to exact revenge and unravel the plot surrounding her. The premise also allows the viewer to experience the twists and turns of the story alongside our protagonist, so we can play the game with Kleo, trying to guess the plot and draw conclusions as it does. . If a show has an interesting premise, why wouldn’t you watch it?
2. The frame
This series takes place at a very interesting time, in a very interesting place. The late 1980s aesthetic has a mix of style and substance that many people will remember or be aware of. With nostalgia on the rise, Kleo looks set to tap into the TV audience zeitgeist and bring the story to a time zone people love – think of the success of stranger thingsand you’ll get an idea of the perfect scenario for it to play out.
3. Jella Haase
The titular character is played by actress Jella Haase, and if trailers are anything, this sounds like a performance that could define her. Haase is shown in different disguises, in many situations, and she looks as dangerous and menacing as possible. However, there are some humorous moments as well, and Haase seems to be able to move easily from scene to scene. Haase is seen making his own poison from puffer fish, then blowing the dust of his concoction into an opponent’s face, like a villain straight from Arkham Asylum, before switching to his training in military uniform, then become a murderous nurse, shooting her victim through a hospital pillow, sending plumes of feathers into the air. All the while, Haase looks and feels like a loose cannon, unleashing its fury as it goes, and appears to be played with conviction.
4. The Music
The trailers hint at a few needle drops, and hopefully the setting will be reflected in the needle drops for this series. In one trailer, we have a rendition of Maybe Maybe playing over a montage of Kleo in different settings, adding an eerie yet playful tone to the scenes. The track sounds great on the visuals and evokes almost Tarantino-esque vibes. We also have some typical synth pop music at the start of the trailer which seems absolutely relevant to the setting, so hopefully the incidental music used will remind us of the early days of Depeche Mode, helping to sell the period of drama,
5. Action
Now I don’t want to spoil too much here but no doubt there will be a number of set pieces throughout this show that should stand up Cleo in almost cinematic levels. There seems to be a lot of tight hand-to-hand combat choreography, with Kleo taking on all sorts of action sequences, including shootouts, car chases, and gunfights. This appears to be a series for mature audiences, and it looks like they’re getting into the gore and splatter as well.
So, as far as my tastes go, Kleo seems like a blast, ticking a lot of boxes and providing thrills, chills and laughs along the way. If you want Kill Eve, Atomic Blonde, and Saltthis show could be for you and our five reasons alone should make you at least give the first episode a try.
