This article discusses 5 reasons to watch the Netflix series The Empress and contains no spoilers.
netflix soon to release his latest period drama series, The Empress, and we couldn’t be more excited. The show chronicles Elisabeth of Austria, or Sisi, in the early years of her marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph. The German show looks to be a lot of fun from its trailer, but here are five good reasons to watch it.
5 reasons to watch The Empress
Reason 1: It will delight fans until the next season of Bridgerton
For series fans like Reign, The Tudors, and Bridgerton, It seems that The Empress might be a new favorite. It promises the same strong heroine, sex appeal, and creative costumes that many people loved on those shows. Especially while fans wait for Netflix to release Bridgertonthe third season, The Empress could fill this place.
Reason 2: The costumes are beautiful
While they certainly don’t seem the most faithful to the story, the trailer shows off sumptuous costumes with beautiful fabrics and colors. Beautiful dresses are certainly one of the draws of almost every period drama series, and The Empress does not seem to disappoint you if you are looking for sumptuous costumes.
Reason 3: It’s co-directed by a woman
The series is directed by Katrin Gebbe and Florian Cossen. Gebbe is a promising German director who studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Enshede as well as the Hamburg Media School. His first feature film, Nothing bad can happen, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013. It’s always exciting to see a creative female voice on a project that portrays the life of a female figure.
Reason 4: Sisi has often been compared to Princess Diana
Princess Diana has always been loved, but with the next season of The crown and the death of another member of the British royal family, she is once again on people’s minds. Comparisons have been drawn between Elisabeth of Austria and the late Princess Diana. They both struggled to raise their children in a royal household, faced an eating disorder and were held to ridiculous standards in the media.
Reason 5: Elisabeth led a fascinating life
Married at the age of 15 to the heir to the Austrian Empire, Empress Elisabeth of Austria led an intriguing life less known in English-speaking countries than royal figures like Elizabeth I or Marie-Antoinette. Throughout her life, she struggled with intense beauty standards, her draconian stepmother, an eating disorder and mental health issues. She traveled widely and was very involved in culture and pursued many hobbies. Her son died in the Mayerling incident, a double suicide with his young mistress which is still somewhat of a mystery, and she was murdered by a political radical. Hopefully some of the truth about his life will be portrayed on the show.
