1899 season 2 CANCELED – why did Netflix cancel? We discuss the shocking news behind a major cancellation on the streaming platform.

The filmmaking duo and their real partners Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar are back after their hit series Dark finished in 2020. Their highly anticipated follow-up series, titled 1899is an epic period drama set aboard the ocean liner the KerberosName. Just like their first netflix Original, this latest offering involves mystery, horror elements, and a healthy dose of sci-fi spectacle to once again entice unsuspecting viewers.

The series focuses on the disappearance of a ship of similar design, called the Prometheus, which has close ties to the crew and passengers aboard Kerberos. Captain Eyk Larsen (Andreas Pietschmann) and his shipmates discover this missing ghost ship while traveling to New York across the formidable Atlantic Ocean. Untold horrors and unparalleled mysteries await the unfortunate aboard the Kerberos, when these two ships are stranded alongside each other.

First season of 1899 is an addictive and confusing thrill ride, teasing little snippets of information about its cast of characters and other mysteries with each episode. All installments seem to end with unfathomable cliffhangers that will surely divide viewers. The show is beautifully crafted in every area, from the cinematic visuals to the atmospheric score, with an engrossing storyline and impressive ensemble. It’s superb craftsmanship all around that needs to be applauded, but will Netflix return to those perilous seas for a second installment?

1899 season 2 CANCELED – why did Netflix cancel?

Updated January 2, 2023

It has been confirmed by an official source that there will be no second season of 1899 – Netflix canceled the series. Creator Baran Bo Odar confirmed via his Instagram news page:

With heavy hearts, we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to end this incredible epic with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did Dark. But sometimes things don’t go the way you planned. That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being part of this wonderful adventure.

We love you. Never forget.

This may not come as a huge surprise to many. Netflix is canceling many shows based on hours-watched data, but the streaming service had high expectations that they could give 1899 a chance, in particular thanks to the success of Dark, which has amassed a large fan base over time. This may be a sign of things to come for Netflix, with a more ruthless approach in mind.

We are disappointed. It’s a big hit for those who enjoyed Dark and wanted another equally thought-provoking series.

At the moment, 1899 has not been renewed by Netflix, but we expect more news in due course. Dark, Netflix’s first German original ran for three seasons, totaling 26 episodes. The show managed to end satisfactorily, somehow end its complex narrative in a believable way. Dark was an exemplary television series, but it must have seemed like a tough sell at the time. Imagine launching a German sci-fi series with an intricate time travel plot. However, the bet was worth it, becoming a success for the streaming platform. With a bit of luck, 1899 can provide similar results.

The series involves multiple languages, multiple storylines, and many complicated characters. It’s fairly easy to follow but requires multiple watches to fully understand. Audiences may be put off by the complex nature of the show and its dizzying twists and turns, though it might do the average viewer a disservice. I believe audiences want to be entertained and just as perplexed these days. That is why Dark successful in the first place. Audiences want to be able to put the pieces together and try to solve these mysteries on their own. And the trickier the puzzle, the better the experience.

I think 1899 could be a huge hit for Netflix, and so I predict it will be renewed by the streaming giants in due course. It’s not that hard to assume it’s really happening dark the story. The company is a clear winner with this series and its continued partnership with Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. With a bit of luck, 1899 is equally successful and leads to new adventures for the German duo. As always, we’ll keep you posted on any updates regarding the pending renewal of 1899.
