Read about Yami Shibai
The Japanese Theater of Darkness and Yami Shibai, Yamishibai ghost stories appear in an ongoing Japanese animated series. Tomoya Takashima directed the first season, with scripts written and produced by Hiromu Kumamoto, ILCA. The Kamishibai storytelling method has been animated in every episode. The series consists of stories that last only a few minutes. Each episode tells a unique story based on Japanese myths and urban legends.
Every week at 5 pm, an old man (a kamishibaiya or kamishibai storyteller) appears in a yellow mask at a playground, telling elaborate stories based on Japanese urban legends. Every day, the man tells a new bicycle story in the traditional kamishibai (talking paper theater) style. Instead of the old man in the yellow mask with his kamishibai scene, a boy (who will later learn to be kamishibaiya as a child) sits on a slide and sings in a playground: “Friends this side, go this side, friends on this side, go on this side… ”as they drew the creatures in the stories.
The narrator’s mask sings the closing song to him at the end of each episode, multiplying as each episode ends with the last one on the boy’s face. Beginning with season 4, Kamishibaiya reverts to the original format of seasons 1 and 2, telling stories to children on a playground every 17 hours (voice actors are different in each episode). The kids don’t swing in season 5. Instead, they put together the old man’s call scheme. Instead of a school, the old man tells stories in a forest in season 6.
A shadow takes the appearance of the old man and then puts the mask on the story. In season 7, an old man tells his stories in a raucous apartment. In season 8, he tells his stories at an urban crossroads surrounded by strange and delicate passengers.
