HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon is finally here. Australian actress Milly Alcock plays the young princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the epic fantasy prequel set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

The aspiring actor has previously starred on Australian television but is relatively new to Hollywood and until recently was washing dishes to make ends meet. However, Milly is already the public face of the series, having appeared on promotional posters, and her portrayal of the steely Rhaenyra is heralded as one that will make her a household name.

Amelia May Alcock and her two brothers were raised with her parents in Sydney, Australia after her birth on April 11, 2000. Milly had her first stage experience at the age of six in a church theater performance of Little Red Rocking Hood. She wore a denim skirt and cowboy boots.

The actress’ early interest in the story was sparked by rewinding a stolen blockbuster DVD of Audrey Hepburn’s classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s, she said in an interview with American fashion magazine Flaunt(opens in new tab).

Milly, a year 12 student at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts in Sydney, played the role of Meg, a runaway teenager, in the Australian drama Upright, starring acclaimed comedian Tim Minchin. Milly decided to give up further schooling and focus on her acting career when she realized how demanding the filming would be. Her performance as misfit Meg in the eight-part series paid off as she was awarded the 2018 Casting Guild of Australia Rising Star Award.

Speaking to Miss Vogue Australia (opens in new tab), Milly said she has no compunction: I felt this opportunity was so much more valuable than earning my piece of paper. I said to myself, no, this is what I was working towards, and I got this incredible opportunity with this incredible cast and beautiful script. In March 2022, Milly headed to Queensland, Australia to film episodes for Upright’s second season, which was already airing in Australia and was due to be exported to the UK and Canada.

A while back Milly was squatting in the attic of her mother’s house in Australia. Between her acting roles, she washed dishes at a restaurant to make ends meet. During this time, she also sent two self-tapes to an undisclosed HBO project.

Milly’s life changed forever when her agent called just two weeks later to say she had been cast to play Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on House of the Dragon. In an interview for Stellar(opens in new tab), Milly reflected on this momentous event and said: I never dreamed that this would happen to me. So I stopped and asked my companion: Do you have any wine? After that I called my mother.

Princess Rhaenyra, played by Milly, rides dragons, as the name of the series suggests. Styrax, Rhaenyra’s eagle-inspired mount, serves as her pet of sorts throughout the series. Styrax is an optical illusion, so Milly spent a lot of time playing with a fake blue screen, which she found hilarious.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, the actress gave a talk about her experience with Syrax. Milly explained: You are sitting on what appears to be a mechanical bull, the kind you would ride in a club or pub. Strange, isn’t it? Four men are standing around with leaf blowers and the bull is ten feet in the air.
