On September 12, 1971, Jesse Powell was born in Gary, Indiana. He grew up with his three siblings, Jacob, Trina and Tamara, who later became well-known R&B singers and whose song What’d You Come Here For? reached #56 on the Billboard Hot 100. They also had a brother named Jacob.

He was an avid participant in church music for most of his childhood, spent with his family in Gary, Indiana. Powell completed his high school education at a private school in Gary, Indiana, and then continued his education at Hampton University.
