Evil is a supernatural drama series developed by Robert and Michelle King. It follows David Acosta, a devout priest-in-training who teams up with forensic psychologist Kristen Bouchard and tech expert Ben Shakir to investigate paranormal cases. The trio is employed by the Catholic Church and works as appraisers.
For the first two seasons, Bishop Thomas Marx (Peter Scolari) is present to accompany the trio on their mysterious discoveries and inexplicable experiences. However, Marx is absent from the third season of the series. If you’re wondering the whereabouts of Marx and looking for an answer to his absence in Evil Season 3, here’s everything you need to know! SPOILERS AHEAD!
What happened to Bishop Thomas Marx?
Bishop Thomas Marx is introduced in the ninth episode of the first season entitled Exorcism Part 2, with actor Peter Scolari (Lisey’s Story) taking on the role. Marx is a veteran church official who has several years of experience dealing with the occult. He tasks David and his team with cases related to alleged paranormal events. However, Marx himself remains skeptical about the presence of supernatural forces in most of these cases.
In the second season, Marx takes on a more prominent role, working closely with David and his team. He is also empowered and possesses the abilities to perform exorcisms. Marx makes his final appearance in the eleventh episode of Season 2 entitled I Is for IRS, in which he enlists David and his team to investigate Satan’s New Ministry. After solving the problems with the help of the IRS, Marx is not seen again in season 2.
Why isn’t Bishop Thomas Marx in season 3 of Evil?
Bishop Thomas Marx does not appear in the third season of the series. His absence is not directly addressed on-screen in the season 3 premiere. However, the character was dropped from the series due to a real-life tragedy. Actor Peter Scolari, who played Bishop Marx, passed away on October 22, 2021.
The veteran actor was diagnosed with leukemia two years earlier and the disease ultimately deprived the world of the talented actor. Scolari was 66 years old at the time of his death and his performance in Evil Season 2 is among his last acting achievements. Series creators Robert and Michelle King regretted the actor’s death and praised his work on the series in a joint statement released in October 2021. It was always exciting to watch his daytime shots because you could see his craft in action. He worked with us until April 27th (2021) and he was amazing in every episode. We will miss him terribly, the statement said.
Other cast members like Mike Colter (David Acosta) and Aasif Mandvi (Ben Shakir) have also honored Scolari on social media. The third season premiere of Evil, titled The Demon of Death, is dedicated to the memory of Scolari. Scolari’s untimely death means his time as Bishop Thomas Marx in Evil has come to an abrupt end. Fans can only hope that future episodes will draw a line and clarify the character’s whereabouts in the series’ universe. Nonetheless, viewers will remember Scolari’s role as Bishop Marx for bringing a touch of humor to the show’s otherwise dramatic and dark storyline.
