Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 1 spoilers
In season 1, after Askeladd assassinates his former warrior father Thors, Thorfinn joins his nemesis and his violent Viking forces, consumed in revenge. Despite his weakness, the young protagonist continues to defy the leader of the Viking mercenary gang, only to be humiliated by him every time he finds himself on the battlefield. Over time, it becomes increasingly apparent that Thorfinn can barely stand up to Askeladd, and in their last encounter he is brutally beaten by the seasoned fighter who knows all of his weaknesses.
In the season finale, Askeladd tries to convince King Sweyn, in the Imperial Council, that invading the resource-poor highlands of Wales is a poor strategic choice. After hearing their arguments, the king forces the leader of the Unchained Vikings to choose between Wales and Canute, an offer that does not suit Askeladd, who beheads Sweyn and claims to be Lucius Artorius Castus, the rightful heir to the throne of Britannia.
However, when he realizes he has a chance to claim King Sweyn’s position, Canute murders Askeladd with a stab to the heart. Thorfinn only joins the Imperial Council to see him die in his arms and quickly attacks Canute with a knife, but the soldiers catch him and drag him away. Season 1 ends in suspense, with Thorfinn’s fate being unknown to viewers.
As the first twenty-four episodes adapted the manga’s war arc, Season 2 is expected to focus on the slavery arc. After being dragged away by Canute’s soldier, Thorfinn is likely to be sold as a slave. However, someone like him is not going to back down so easily and will likely start planning his escape from slave life. You may be able to befriend your fellow slavers and find moral support, but your life purpose will change dramatically in light of Askeladd’s sudden death.
In the meantime, we can expect Canuto to carry out his plans to improve the areas under his authority. His influence in Norway, England, and Denmark is likely to grow as well. But what will be the success of your noble projects? Only time will tell. Season 2 will undoubtedly be a great time to watch, with plenty of action and political drama.
