United States of Al Season 3: Renewed or Cancelled?

January 27, 2022

United States of Al is one CBSsitcom centered on the unique friendship between Marine combat veteran Riley and Afghan interpreter Awalmir, aka Al. While Riley struggles to adjust to civilian life in Ohio, Al moves to the United States to start over. With their funny adventures they help each other to get ahead in life.

Developed by David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari, the series was originally released on April 1, 2021. Although the series was initially criticized for casting the role of Al with non-Afghan actor Adhir Kalyan, it has amassed a decent following. Some critics even expressed optimism about the future of the series given the likable characters and original premise. Does that mean there will be a 3rd season? Let’s find out!

United States of Al Season 3 Release Date

The second season of United States of Al first aired on CBS on October 7, 2021 and will conclude on January 27, 2022. All 13 episodes of the second season have a length of about 20 minutes each.

As for the third season of the series, here’s the thing. Neither the creators of the series nor CBS have officially announced a new season. But we have good reason to believe the series will return to our screens. While viewership hasn’t been stellar, the series has been a more or less consistent success for the network. This means that CBS believes the comedy series is reliable enough to keep viewers at least one more round and is therefore ordering the third season.

Also, due to the political scenario in Afghanistan in the third quarter of 2021, the production for the season 2 premiere had to be reworked. Despite the changes made, season 2 began airing less than four months after the end of the first episode. According to sources, the sitcom’s cast and crew will continue filming after the second season until the end of March 2022. Since season 3 has not yet been officially confirmed, it is possible that the team is in the process of filming special episodes.

As Ferrari and Goetsch shared in an October 2021 interview, the team likes to shoot the episodes closer to the air date because the writers are closely monitoring the ever-changing socio-political situation in Afghanistan. Goetsch even called the short filming experience exciting and possibly the best way to tell Riley and Al’s story. So if the series gets the green light for another episode soon, we can expect Season 3 of United States of Al to arrive sometime in Q2 2022 or later.

United States of Al Season 3 Cast: Who Could Be In?

When the series returns with a third installment, we can expect most of the main cast to reprise their roles. That means Adhir Kalyan and Parker Young could reprise their roles as Awalmir Karimi aka Al and Riley Dugan. Elizabeth Alderfer (Lizzie Dugan), Kelli Goss (Vanessa), Dean Norris (Art Dugan) and Farrah Mackenzie (Hazel Dugan) also star in pivotal roles.

The actors portraying recurring characters are Brian Thomas Smith (Freddy), Rachel Bay Jones (Lois), Azita Ghanizada (Ariana), Amanda Payton (Holly) and John Ross Bowie (Professor Brett Williams). So when the series resumes, we’ll likely see most of them again. In addition, we will see some new faces.

United States of Al Season 3 Plot: What can it be about?

In the second season, Al’s mental health is highlighted. Riley, Art and Lizzie encourage him to seek professional help after he begins to suffer from panic attacks. On the other hand, Al’s love life gets quite eventful when he starts dating Ariana. Riley’s new relationship causes some friction between him and Vanessa, who also have different views on raising Hazel. To make matters worse, Riley realizes he didn’t have time to spend with his daughter while on assignment. While Art faces some challenges in his relationship with Lois, Lizzie and Al’s Professor Brett take their romance to the next level and grow closer.

Should there be a third season, we’ll see how the members of the Dugan family navigate their respective love lives. As for Al, things have changed quite dramatically since he came to Ohio. What’s next for him personally and professionally will likely be explored in a possible season 3.
