Tomodachi Game Season 2: Renewed or Cancelled?

June 23, 2022

Based on the Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yuki Sato, Tomodachi Game is a psychological thriller anime. The series follows Yuuichi Katagiri, a high school student who values friendship and has developed a strong bond with his close circle of classmates over the years. On the surface, their life seems perfect, but an unforeseen circumstance changes everything. When their friendship is tested in a psychologically manipulative game that promises riches, the five friends learn the harsh realities of life. The riveting drama that unfolds has caught the attention of anime fans around the world and has also garnered critical acclaim thanks to its masterfully crafted premise and great storytelling.

After the indecisive end of the first episode, fans are now excited to see when the series will return for more episodes and provide answers to some of their pressing questions. If you’re excited for the next season and want to know more about it, then we’ve got you covered.

Tomodachi Game Season 2 Release Date

‘Tomodachi Game’ Season 1 was released on April 6, 2022 and ended a few weeks later on June 22, 2022. The first season consists of twelve episodes, each lasting about 22-25 minutes.

As for the return of anime, here’s all we know so far. Studio Okuruto Noboru has not yet renewed the series for another season. Since no other party involved in the production of the series has officially commented on the future of the series, we need to consider other factors to make an educated guess. The first season ends with an inconclusive outcome: Yuuichi is badly injured and unable to participate in the game, while Tenji and Yutori promise him to bring Shibe home.

So it seems like a well-considered decision by the creators to tell the rest of the story in one or more future episodes. We get a further clarification by looking at Yuki Sato’s manga series that serves as the inspiration for the anime. In the first season, only 6 out of 20 volumes of the manga were adapted, which means there is still a lot of source material for at least two more episodes. The anime has received good reviews on most online platforms and it has been officially announced that there will be a new live-action TV adaptation in the near future.

The manga has already served as the basis for two live-action films and a four-part TV drama series in 2017, and it seems that the enthusiasm for similar content has hardly waned in recent years. The cliffhanger ending, growing popularity, availability of source material, and good online ratings are therefore almost a guarantee that the anime will get the green light for another installment. Assuming things develop as expected, we can expect Tomodachi Game Season 2 to premiere sometime in Q1 or Q2 2024.

Tomodachi Game Season 2 Plot: What can it be about?

In the season 1 finale, Kuroki challenges Yutori to the weak win game in which she has to endure pain. If she can do that, she and her friends are allowed to leave, but there’s a twist. She can also choose Yuuichi to suffer in her place on the condition that he endure three times the pain she should have originally endured. When the game is played, Yuuichi ends up taking Yutori’s place in all the challenges, getting quite injured in the process.

However, he shows remarkable bravery and challenges Kuroki to a game of rock, paper, scissors with a few different rules. Yuuichi not only defeats him, but also puts Kuroki in a similar situation to Yutori, forcing him to test his friends. However, the bloody experience takes a heavy toll on him, and he loses consciousness after losing a large amount of blood. Unable to take part anymore, he is taken to a hospital while Tenji and Yutori promise to take Shibe home with them.

In Season 2, after Yuuichi is taken to the hospital, the responsibility of defending Shibe, who is accused of murdering his father, is placed on Tenji and Yutori’s shoulders. However, they have the option to skip the friendly court and go to game five if they want. In this case, however, Shibe will disappear. Tenji and Yutori decide to defend their friend from Judge Manabu, but to save him they must convince the jury members, who are none other than the students in their own class. But as they begin the game, the two friends wonder if saving Shibe is even worth it.
