The First Slam Dunk update: Takehiko Inoue shares important information about the upcoming movie

October 25, 2022

Takehiko Inoue gave fans an important update on the upcoming The First Slam Dunk movie on his blog. After several years of production, the film is finally nearing completion.

Twenty-six years after it aired, fans will see Sakuragi Hanamichi, Hisahi Mitsui, Miyagi Ryota, Rukawa Kaede and the rest of the gang back on the basketball court. However, this time they will be seen on the big screen in The First Slam Dunk.

The creator started his blog by thanking everyone who has supported him since the start of his hit manga series in October 1990. Thirty-two years have passed, and the franchise is still loved by many.

The mangaka realized that he could create something new after embarking on the path he had traveled before. Therefore, he was grateful for everyone who had read the manga in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine and the printed volumes, watched the anime on the small screens, and recently discovered the series.

“I feel like the characters live on in me even after the show ends,” he said. Every time he drew a new illustration for the latest volume or art book, he would call it up from somewhere inside and renew it, as if breathing new life into those characters.

So, with the release of The First Slam Dunk, fans will see a new slam dunk with a fresh perspective. Inoue added that he decided to work on the film because he hopes to breathe new life into his iconic series.

Production is now in the midst of the final ramp up with the help of the entire workforce, he continued. From the looks of it, Toie Animation is hard at work again on the production of the anime film to bring the franchise back to life.

Meanwhile, Inoue has already given fans a first look at The First Slam Dunk by releasing a new key visual. The series is about a ruthless boy who finds his true purpose in life through basketball.

The manga was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1990 to 1996. The English version can be read on Viz Media.

It was then adapted as an anime beginning in 1993 and ending in 1996. For fans wanting to catch up on the series, it’s available to stream on Crunchyroll. The First Slam Dunk will hit theaters on December 3rd.
