Spriggan Season 2: Extended or Cancelled?

June 21, 2022

Based on the manga series of the same name by Hiroshi Takashige and illustrated by Ryoji Minagawa, Sprigaan is a sci-fi action ONA series. The story revolves around Yu Ominae, a 17-year-old employee of the ARCAM Foundation, an organization that collects—or, if necessary, seals or destroys—powerful artifacts from ancient civilizations. Yu is one of the eponymous Spriggans, the elite troop of ARCAM’s military wing. Although Yu is one of ARCAM’s best agents, he is still a teenager and desperate to spend more time with his classmates at his school, where he is rarely seen.

After the release of the first season, Spriggan received mostly positive reviews. Much praise was given to the animation and combat sequences, although the anime was criticized for having too many explanatory scenes, a common problem with anime series. If you’re wondering if there will be a second season of Spriggan, we’ve got you covered.

Spriggan season 2 release date

‘Spriggan’ Season 1 premiered on June 18, 2022 Netflix Premiere. It consists of six episodes with a running time of 43-47 minutes. The anime was developed by Studio David Productions, with Hiroshi Kobayashi serving as the main director and Hiroshi Seko serving as the scriptwriter and series composer. The original manga also inspired the 1998 anime film of the same name and the 1999 PlayStation game Spriggan: Lunar Verse. As for the second season of ‘Spriggan’, here’s what we know.

Neither the series’ producers nor Netflix officials have confirmed the development of a second season. However, the end credits scene of the first season hints at a possible second season. Sho Kanaya, one of the manga’s main antagonists, makes his debut in the ONA and is sent to Yu’s school to assassinate him. This indicates that the producers have full intentions to develop a second season of the series.

The original manga series by Takashige and Minagawa reportedly has 11 volumes and includes more stories than shown in Spriggan’s first season. So there is enough content to develop further seasons. Also, Spriggan is very popular as a manga, so there is a ready fan base for the series. If Spriggan can replicate the success of ONAs like Blood of Zeus and Record of Ragnarok, both of which have been renewed for additional seasons, there’s a reasonable chance Spriggan will be renewed as well. If that happens over the next few months, viewers can expect the release of Spriggan Season 2 sometime in Q2 2024.

Spriggan Season 2 Plot: What could it be?

The first season of Spriggan consists of largely self-contained episodes, but with some overarching storylines. In the season 1 finale titled The Forgotten Kingdom, Yu is forced to confront his past while battling his former mentor, Bowman, who dies in his arms. Also, he realizes that he shouldn’t trust ARCAM entirely. In the post-credits scene, a soldier single-handedly takes out an entire squad of mercenaries and is subsequently sent to Yu’s school as a student to eliminate him. The soldier’s eyes begin to glow red, suggesting he may have powers similar to the Spriggans.

In the anticipated season 2, this soldier’s identity will likely be revealed as Sho Kanaya. Maybe we’ll learn more about Yu’s past too. In the manga, just like Sho, Yu was a member of the COSMOS project. COSMOS consists of brainwashed children collected from around the world by CIA agents and American soldiers. Sho’s superior in the credits scene may turn out to be Colonel Ralph Cooley. The Sasahara twins may find out about Yu’s double life in the next season.
