The Duke of Death and his maid: summary and overview of episode 1
The Duke of Death and His Maiden is based on a manga of the same name and follows a fairy tale premise: a young man is cursed by a witch so that everything he has touched will wither and die. Because of this, he is known as the Duke of Death, and his mother banishes him to a mansion where he will not be a threat to others.
The only person who cares for him is his maid, Alice. In Episode 1, Philip, a childhood friend of the Duke, visits him, but the Duke’s hopes of rekindling their relationship are dashed when it is revealed that Philip finds the curse creepy and repulsive. In fact, Philip only came because the duke’s mother instigated him to spy on her son, whom he plans to replace with his younger brother as heir.
The Duke is heartbroken, but the experience strengthens his determination to break the curse so that one day he can begin a romantic relationship with Alice, the only person who doesn’t run from him.
