Based on the manga series written by Shinya Umemura and Takumi Fukui and illustrated by Ajichika, “Record of Ragnarok” is an ONA action film (or original network animation). It portrays Ragnarok as a great tournament in which 13 human fighters from the history of the world face 13 gods from different pantheons to ensure the survival of humanity for another 1,000 years. Brunhilde, the first of the 13 Valkyrie sisters, helps humans. Brunilde is the one who suggests that the gods organize the Ragnarok tournament to decide the fate of humans and not simply to exterminate them.
Knowing that humans are no match for the gods and their divine weapons, the Valkyries create a pact between themselves and the fighters they have chosen. This pact, called Völundr, allows the Valkyries to become the favorite weapons of their humans. After its premiere, the series received mixed or positive reviews. If you’ve ever watched “Record of Ragnarok” season 1 and wondering if there will be a season 2, we’ve got you covered.
Record of Ragnarok Season 2 Release Date
Season 1 of “Record of Ragnarok” premiered on June 17, 2021 on Netflix. The inaugural season has 12 episodes that last between 24 and 25 minutes each. Studio Graphinica developed the anime in collaboration with Warner Bros. Japan, which took over production. Masao Ookubo led the directing team while Kazuyuki Fudeyasu led the writing team.
As for season 2, this is what we know. Neither Netflix executives nor the anime’s creators have yet commented on the matter. However, Netflix has an impressive track record of renewing its anime plans. Over the years, the streaming giant has contributed to the production of several seasons of ONA such as “Aggretsuko” and “Baki.” If “Record of Ragnarok” manages to replicate the success of the aforementioned projects, the creators will be motivated enough to pick up the story.
The original manga series is currently ongoing. The anime only adapted the content of the first 5 volumes (20 chapters) of the original material. In the summer of 2021, 10 volumes were published. So there is already a lot of material available to develop a second season. If the ONA renews for the second season in the coming months, expect “Record of Ragnarok” to launch sometime in 2022.
Record of Ragnarok season 2 plot: what is it?
In Season 1, the gods win the first two of the 13 Ragnarok matches, while the humans win the third. Thor, the Norse god of thunder, defeats the legendary Chinese general Lu Bu and his partner Valkyrie Randgriz. Zeus, the president of the Council of Valhalla, wins against Adam, the progenitor of all humanity, and his partner Reginleif. In Game 3, Japanese swordsman Kojirou Sasaki and his partner Valkyrie Hrist defeat Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. In the post-credits scene at the end of Season 1, Jack the Ripper and Hercules prepare to face off.
Season 2 will probably cover the next 3-4 fights. Hercules is highly regarded, even among Valkyries and humans, and Jack is hated. Therefore, the Greek hero could receive some support from his opponents. Ultimately, though, Jack is likely to win the match with the help of his partner Valkyrie Hlökk. In Match 5, Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction, will likely face Raiden Tameemon, the legendary Japanese sumo wrestler, and his partner Valkyrie Prudr. Shiva is likely to win the match, once again giving the leadership of the tournament to the gods. In Game 6, Buddha, the creator of Buddhism, could switch sides and fight for humans.
