Some people would give their all for immortality, but in Netflix’s South Korean political-era zombie horror series “Kingdom,” immortality comes at a price. Creator and writer Kim Eun-hee and director duo Kim Seong-hun and Park In-je weave a tale of visceral horror and dark intrigue. The series begins with the appearance of a mysterious plant called the “resurrection plant,” named for its immortalization abilities. But the political mystery is complicated: people turn into zombies, the queen kidnaps pregnant women and the zombie king feeds on the bodies of the workers.
The crown prince leads a mission to take down the undead demons, while the evil queen establishes a zombie research laboratory below her residence. Adapted from the ‘Kingdom of the Gods’ web comic series, the labyrinthine story is forcefully told and the political metaphor behind the horror makes the story even scarier. Since its premiere in 2019, the critically acclaimed horror drama has spawned two seasons and a special, leading to speculation about a third season. Season 2’s time jump opens up a plethora of possibilities and directions to explore the story. If you’re looking for updates on Season 3, let us keep you posted!
Kingdom season 3 release date
Season 2 of ‘Kingdom’ premiered in its entirety on March 13, 2020 on Netflix. The season consists of six episodes, the episodic duration of which varies between 36 and 56 minutes. But that is not all. In order to keep fans interested in preparing for season three, the creator offered a special episode, titled “Ashin of the North,” which landed on the streaming platform on July 23, 2021.
Now let’s analyze the possibilities of the third season. We can only speculate as Netflix has yet to officially renew the popular series for a third season. Fortunately, the creator seeks to take the story to an epic realm. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter in April 2020, creator Kim Eun-hee said, “Strangely, Kingdom is a series that gives me more and more energy as I write it. The cast and crew have great chemistry and there’s a lot to tell. If viewers allow it, I would love to see it develop even into season 10. “
There is also enough room for further exploration of the story and it can be stretched in many directions. The series was also highly regarded by critics due to its harmonious combination of political realism and supernatural horror. Therefore, there are many reasons why Netflix is reviewing the series for a third sequel. However, productions were affected in 2020 due to the onset of the pandemic, when fiction became too real.
As for the possible premiere date, this is what we can deduce with certainty from the series premiere scheme. While it’s difficult to predict when season three will be released, we can make a rough estimate based on the production and premiere schedule for previous seasons. If Netflix gives the green light to season three by the end of 2021, we can expect season 3 of “Kingdom” to air in 2022.
Kingdom season 3 cast: Who can be a part of it?
In all likelihood, the entire main cast will reprise their roles in season three. Among the regular cast members, we hope to see Ju Ji-hoon (Crown Prince Lee Chang), Bae Doona (Seo-bi), Kim Sung-kyu (Yeong-shin), and Jun Ji-hyun (Ashin). It looks like there will be several new cast members as well, including some faces from the film’s special episode.
Kingdom season 3 plot: what is it?
The second season begins with the visceral scenes of the horde of zombies wreaking havoc on the Crown Prince’s army. It is also revealed that zombies can now go out into the daylight. As the crown prince assembles a varied team to fend off the undead, the menacing queen seeks to ascend to the throne, believing that the crown prince cannot be the rightful heir. In the queen’s private court, pregnant women are murdered in numbers. Although the Queen cannot give birth on her own, she presents the baby of the Royal Guard as her own.
The Queen also sets up a laboratory in the basement of her palace to investigate zombies, and when things don’t go her way, she unleashes the horde of zombies. She becomes the victim of her own plot, but the crown prince escapes the massacre. After a seven-year time jump, we see that the baby is crowned King, even though the former crown prince knows the truth. The former crown prince is investigating the apparent reappearance of the virus with Seo-bi and Yeong-shin. We see a mysterious woman named Ashin with fellow zombies ready to be deployed at will.
The special shows Ashin’s story, revealing that it was she who sold the resurrection plant to the king’s doctor, sparking the chain of events. If it is renewed, the story can evolve in many directions and the possibilities are potentially endless. The first question that arises in everyone’s mind is whether the baby is a zombie. It can be a zombie-human hybrid, which means it can control its predatory instincts. If the quest for the Queen is successful, that will be revealed in future episodes. We also know that there are ways to defend against the horde, even a cure.
Ashin is presumably drawn to his revenge, and we’ll see how his seemingly sinister plot unfolds. In the aesthetic mode of the series, the seasons are based on different themes. While hunger is the theme of the first season, the second season addresses the issue of blood. Eun-hee has said that the upcoming season will draw on the theme of grudge as the main point of the plot, and we couldn’t be more excited to see this horror unfold. It will certainly be more exciting, bloodier and bloodier.
