Kanye West has joined the list of celebrities who have criticized Balenciaga after the controversial ad campaign that showed children holding BDSM-themed teddy bears. The rapper, along with his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, is one of the luxury brand’s biggest supporters and collaborators.
Paparazzi questioned West after church on Saturday, November 26, about his reaction to the issue. There, the controversial star called on his colleagues to denounce Balenciaga, who had already broken off contact with him after his anti-Semitic comments in October.
The hip-hop artist explained to TMZ that their silence shows they are all being controlled as no one is speaking out about the situation. He advised everyone not to be influenced by all these celebrities as they would be controlled by the people who really influence the world.
They don’t serve God, he continued.
A day after West’s interview, Kardashian finally broke her silence after being reprimanded for her silence. The Kardashians star is known for starring in Balenciaga ad campaigns and wearing their designs almost exclusively.
In a post on Twitter on Sunday November 27, she admitted she had been silent for the past few days, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t disgusted and outraged by the offensive advert. She first wanted to speak to her team to understand how something like this could happen.
As a mother, she was also shocked by the disturbing images of the campaign and emphasized that the safety of the children must have the highest priority. She also stated that any attempt to normalize child abuse should have no place in society.
An hour later, Kardashian added an addendum about her partnership with the label, revealing that she was reevaluating her relationship with the brand. She will base her decision on whether the label is willing to take responsibility for something that should never have happened and what she expects from them to protect the children.
Meanwhile, Balenciaga has opened on Monday November 28th Instagram Apologies again for the BDSM advert. It said it strongly condemns child abuse and never intended to include children in its portrayal.
The company apologized for mistakenly selecting children as models for its bondage-style bear bags and for including a page of a Supreme Court ruling on child pornography in the background of one of its Spring 2023 ads.
The company acknowledged that the two separate ad campaigns reflected a series of serious mistakes for which it took responsibility
Bella Hadid has yet to comment on the subject, despite recently starring in a Balenciaga campaign. However, she deleted her posts about it on Instagram, although Nicole Kidman, who also appeared in the commercial, still uploaded her pictures.
