The singer was born on April 14, 1932 in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky. She was the second child of parents Melvin Theodore Ted Webb (1912-1981) and Clara Marie Clary Webb (1906-1959).
Her father was a subsistence farmer and coal miner, hence the song. She and her siblings are of Cherokee and Irish descent. She was named Loretta Young after the actress. In 1948, Loretta married American talent manager Oliver Lynn.
Within a month of meeting, they married. At that time, Loretta was 15 years old. Although they were married for almost 50 years, Oliver’s drinking and extramarital affairs caused many marital problems in their union. On August 22, 1996, at the age of 69, Oliver died of congestive heart failure.
