Rita Braver was born on April 12, 1948 in New York City. She is an American television news correspondent working for CBS News. She is best known for her extensive coverage of White House scandals such as the Iran Contra incident.
Rita Braver grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she was born into a Jewish family. When she was still a child, her father died. Her two sisters are Bettie Braver Sugar and Sharon Braver Cohen.

A few years after starting her career as an editor at WWL TV in New Orleans she moved to Washington, DC with her husband and began working as a producer for CBS in 1972. From 1983 to 1993, Braver was CBS News’ principal legal analyst.
She uncovered the spy ring run by John Walker and another spy, Jonathan Pollard. She also oversaw coverage of the Iran-Contra affair on CBS. During Bill Clinton’s first term in office, she was CBS’s principal White House correspondent, and since 1998 she has been the station’s principal national correspondent.
On April 10, 1972, she married Robert B. Barnett, an attorney born in Washington, DC in 1946, whom she had met in college. In 1978 their daughter was born and she married Daniel Ross Penn in a Jewish wedding in Washington, DC

After completing her studies, Braver worked as a copier for WWL-TV in New Orleans for a number of years. A few months later, she and her husband moved to Washington, DC, where Braver began working as a producer for CBS in 1972.
During her brief tenure as chief legal reporter at CBS News (from 1983 to 1993), which lasted only ten years, she worked on important stories such as the spy ring led by John Walker and the activities of another spy, Jonathan Pollard.
While working for CBDS, she was instrumental in reporting on important issues such as the Iran-Contra scandal. During Bill Clinton’s first term in office, she was also the chief correspondent for the White House at CBS.
She has been the national Sunday morning correspondent for the CBS Network since 1998. During her tenure for Sunday Morning she has covered all the major issues, from the arts to national politics and foreign policy.
In that capacity, Braver was previously the chief correspondent for the White House. When she started at CBS Sunday Morning, her coverage included the rise of the blogosphere and doomsday scenarios.
