Putin attended Leningrad State University to study law, and Anatoly Sobchak was his professor there. Sobchak later became a prominent reformer during the perestroika era. Putin worked for the KGB (Committee for State Security) as a foreign intelligence officer for 15 years, including six years in Dresden, East Germany.

In 1990 he retired from active KGB service with the rank of lieutenant colonel and returned to Russia to take up the post of pro-rector of Leningrad State University, where he was responsible for the university’s external contacts. Soon after, Sobchak, the first democratically elected mayor of St. Petersburg, hired Putin as his advisor. He quickly gained Sobchak’s trust and a reputation for getting things done; by 1994 he had achieved the position of first deputy mayor.

Yeltsin abruptly announced his resignation on December 31, 1999, appointing Putin as acting president. The stern and reserved Putin won the March 2000 elections with around 53% of the vote and promised to heal ailing Russia. As president, he wanted to put an end to corruption and introduce a strictly controlled market economy.

By dividing Russia’s 89 regions and republics into seven new federal districts, each headed by a president-elected delegate, Putin was able to quickly restore his authority over the country. He also abolished the regional governors’ right to a seat in the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament. Putin took steps to curtail the influence of financiers and media moguls, the so-called oligarchs, who were unpopular in Russia, by closing a number of media outlets and taking legal action against other influential figures. In 2002, Putin declared the military war over, although casualties were still heavy. In Chechnya he faced a difficult situation, in particular with rebels who carried out terrorist attacks in Moscow and launched guerrilla attacks on Russian troops in the mountains of the region.

On July 28, 1983, Putin married Lyudmila Shkrebneva. From 1985 to 1990 they lived in East Germany, where their daughter Ekaterina Putina was born. Mariya Putina, the other daughter, was born in Leningrad. In June 2013 they announced their divorce and in April 2014 they declared it final.

His public appearance is unusual for a politician and is largely defined by his outdoor macho personality. He has performed a number of dangerous and extreme activities while shirtless. He is known for his Putinisms, aphorisms derived from his distinctive use of the Russian language (much like George W. Bush is known for his malapropisms here in the United States). An example of Putinism was when, when asked by American journalist Larry King about the fate of a Russian submarine that went down in an explosion, Putin simply replied: It sank.
