In addition to her major television debut in the 1986 drama-adventure series Downtown, Hargitay made her big screen debut in the 1985 horror comedy Ghoulies. She made numerous film and television appearances in the 1980s and 1990s before landing the lead role of Olivia Benson in the NBC drama series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999-present), for which she received international acclaim. Mariska Hargitay’s mother was a well-known Hollywood singer, model and actress. Jayne Mansfield, whose real name is Vera Jayne Palmer, was born on April 19, 1933. She began her acting career at the University of Texas at Austin and Southern Methodist University. Her early career in Hollywood was a failure as she was turned down for roles at Paramount and Warner Bros.
She later rose to fame and appeared in a number of series including It Takes a Thief (1958), The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw (1958), Kiss Them for Me (1957) and The Wayward Bus (1957). (1960). Jayne was known more as a model than an actress, and she appeared frequently in Playboy. She was also a popular performer and nightclub headliner in Las Vegas. In 1958 she married Mickey Hargitay; the couple had three children, including actress Mariska. After a troubled marriage, they later separated.
After winning the title of Miss Beverly Hills USA in the early 1980s, Hargitay began acting in high school. She enrolled at UCLA and attended the School of Theater, Film and Television after graduating from Marymount High School in 1982.
She dropped out of college and joined the improv troupe Groundlings in Los Angeles, although she failed to graduate. Soon after, she began appearing in smaller roles on television. In the late 1980s, she landed guest roles on shows like Falcon Crest, Tequila & Bonetti, Seinfeld, and ER.

Hargitay founded the Joyful Heart Foundation, which supports women who have experienced sexual abuse and other types of domestic violence. Over 10,000 women and children have received various forms of support from the organization. In September 2011, Hargitay donated $100,000 to her alma institution, the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, to support scholarships for students.
