Charles III, also known as Charles Philip Arthur George (born 14 November 1948), rules over 14 Commonwealth countries in addition to the United Kingdom. He succeeded to the throne after the death of his mother Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022. He was the longest-serving heir to the throne in British history and, at 73, the oldest person to ascend the throne.

Charles was born at Buckingham Palace during the reign of his maternal grandfather, King George VI. Charles became heir apparent when his mother ascended the throne and his grandfather died when he was three years old. In 1958 Charles was created Prince of Wales and in 1969 he was formally installed. He attended the same schools that his father, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh attended: Cheam and Gordonstoun.

Charles later spent a year at Geelong Grammar School’s Timbertop campus in Victoria, Australia. Charles served in the Air Force and Navy from 1971 to 1976 after graduating from the University of Cambridge with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, with whom he had two sons, William and Harry. The couple filed for divorce in 1996 after both had widely publicized extramarital affairs. Diana died the following year. Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles, his longtime partner, in 2005.

Diana accepted Charles’ proposal of marriage in February 1981 and on July 29 they were married at St Paul’s Cathedral. Prince William and Prince Harry, born in 1982 and 1987 respectively, are the couple’s two children. They resided at Kensington Palace and Highgrove House (born 1984). Charles made history by becoming the first royal father to attend the birth of his children.

However, the couple’s differences and the age difference of about 13 years led to problems in the marriage after only five years. In addition, both partners engaged in illicit affairs, with Charles having a secret romance Camilla Parker Bowles would have. Diana and Charles divorced in 1996 after divorcing in 1992.
