Dexter, one of the most successful Showtime series of all time, captivates viewers in the first few seasons, but then it fizzles out with a predictable yet somewhat incoherent story. The end of the series, according to Michael C. Hall himself, was puzzling, confusing, annoying, frustrating to people at best, a whole bunch of negative adjectives. So when it became known that there would be a sequel to Dexter, it immediately caught a lot of attention. Clyde Phillips, who was the showrunner for the first four seasons of the original series, created the sequel, Dexter: New Blood.
As always, a father-son dynamic is at the center of the narrative. This time it’s all about Dexter and his estranged son Harrison (Jack Alcott). Harrison is now an adult and returns to his father’s life after a few years. In case you’re wondering how old Harrison is in Dexter: New Blood ‘or how he found Dexter in the first place, we’ve got you covered.
How old is Harrison in Dexter: New Blood?
Harrison is the biological son of Dexter and Rita Bennett (Julie Benz), Dexter’s late wife. It is first introduced in season 4. At the end of the season, Dexter finds him crying in his mother’s pool of blood after the Trinity killer murdered Rita. This scene is a throwback to Dexter’s own childhood when Harry found him.
These parallels between Dexter and Harrison are regularly drawn as the series progresses and justify Dexter’s fears that Harrison will turn into him. Harrison is three years old in season 7. Dexter himself mentions this to Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski) in episode 8, Argentina. However, in Season 8, things get complicated. The events of the season premiere take place six months after LaGuerta’s death, which occurred at the end of season seven. But Harrison seems to have aged a bit. He’s much more talkative, takes swimming lessons and plays soccer. He’ll likely be four or even five years old by the time season eight comes to an end.
We know it’s been about a decade between Season 8 and Dexter: New Blood ‘. That means Harrison is likely 14, 15, or even 16 years old when Dexter finds him in his cabin. In season 7, Dexter imagines a happy life with Hannah and Harrison and sees a 17-year-old blonde and athletic version (Lucas Adams) of his son. The one that Alcott portrays in the new series is very different.
How did Harrison find Dexter?
At the end of season 8, Dexter fakes his death and moves to Oregon, where he works as a lumberjack. But in Dexter: He’s new blood in Iron Lake, New York. We know from his conversation with Matt Caldwell that he has been working in the fish and game room for a few years. So we can safely assume that he was at Iron Lake for at least that long. It’s possible he was elsewhere before, and it doesn’t have to be Oregon. He’s probably moved from one small, sleepy town to the next in the past decade, getting as far away from Miami as possible. Yet Harrison found him.
One possible reason for this is that at some point in the past few years Dexter contacted Hannah to let her know that he was still alive. Harrison found out about this and found his father on the outskirts of the snowy community of Iron Hill. Or Dexter had reached out to Hannah long ago and let her understand why they needed to be separated. They stayed in touch over the years, culminating in Harrison showing up at Dexter’s cabin.
It’s also possible Harrison has methodically retraced his father’s steps since his alleged death in the Miami hurricane. After all, he’s the son of Dexter and likely inherited his father’s instincts.
