Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor get ahead of UFC 264

July 10, 2021

LAS VEGAS – One of the most anticipated trilogies in MMA history is now official.

Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor spoke Friday morning at UFC Apex. Poirier and McGregor weighed 156 pounds. The pair will meet in the main event of UFC 264 on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.

The score between the two men is 1-1. McGregor defeated Poirier by first-round knockout at UFC 178 in 2014. Poirier returned the favor by stopping McGregor by second-round knockout in January at UFC 257. UFC president Dana White said the winner would receive the upcoming lightweight title against champion Charles Oliveira. .

Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos has stepped in as a replacement should either McGregor or Poirier retire this week. Dos Anjos weighed 156 pounds.

Poirier (27-6, 1 NC) has won back-to-back victories and has only been defeated once since 2016, a loss in a lightweight title fight against the all-time great undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Louisiana native, who fights outside of Florida’s American Top Team, is the former interim UFC lightweight champion. Poirier, 32, is the No. 2 lightweight in the world according to ESPN, right behind Oliveira.

McGregor (22-5), currently unranked by ESPN, is the most recognizable star in the history of the sport, the most profitable UFC fighter of all time. The Irish native has all the pay-per-view records for the promotion. In the Octagon, he was the first concurrent two-division champion in UFC history when he won the lightweight title over Eddie Alvarez in 2016 when he already held the belt. However, the 32-year-old McGregor has just one win and three fights since that fight against Alvarez. And here you are looking to regain the momentum you had during the hottest period in MMA history.

Before the main event, two of the best welterweights in the world managed to weigh each other without a hitch. Gilbert Burns and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson hit the scale at 170.5 pounds. Burns (19-4) saw his six-game winning streak interrupted by a loss to Kamaru Usman at UFC 258 in February. Thompson (16-4-1) has won back-to-back victories and has lost only twice in his last 14 fights. ESPN ranked Burns fourth and Thompson fifth in the welterweight world.

Irene Aldana lost weight by 3.5 pounds and reached 139.5 pounds in her fight against Yana Kunitskaya, another contender for the bantamweight title. The fight will take place, according to the UFC, but Aldana will give up 30% of her purse. According to ESPN, Aldana is ranked No. 6 and Kunitskaya No. 7 in the world in 135-pound women.

The fight and night performance bonus for Saturday’s card will be $ 75,000, compared to the usual $ 50,000, according to Hunter Campbell, UFC chief commercial officer. A total of four bonuses are awarded per card.

UFC President Dana White also increased the amount of bonuses to $ 75,000 at UFC 262 in May, following a request from Tony Ferguson.
