Shuntarō Chishiya, portrayed by Nijirō Murakami, is one of the main characters in the Netflix survival action thriller series Alice in Borderland, based on the manga series of the same name by Haro Aso. Introduced in the second episode of the first season, Chishiya becomes a major factor in the players’ overall victory in the game in the Borderlands. Chishiya is exceptionally intelligent and manipulative, making him a great player in the games of diamonds and hearts. If you’re wondering if Chishiya survives in Alice in the Borderland Season 2, we’ve got you covered. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Does Chishiya die?
No, Chishiya doesn’t die in Alice in the Border season 2. At the end of Season 1, he is one of the four people who find their way into the Observation Center in the subway tunnel, where they find that all the vendors have been killed. At the start of the second season, Chishiya separates from the other members of the group after being attacked by the King of Spades. Chishiya realizes that it would be foolish to attack the King of Spades alone, especially as he is not a great physical player, and comes to seemingly the same conclusion as Arisu that he can avoid a confrontation with the King of Spades by playing other games. The first game he takes part in is the solitary confinement hosted by the Knave of Hearts in Teio Prison. Chishiya, along with serial killer Sunato Banda and yakuza member Ōki Yaba, wins the game, with Chishiya leaving the Jack of Hearts in the very capable hands of Banda and Yaba.
The next game Chishiya plays is held in the Supreme Court by the King of Diamonds, who turns out to be Keiichi Kuzuryū, the former Beach Group No. 2. The game that Kuzuryū invented is called the Beauty Contest and involves scales with sulfuric acid on them. When someone scores a negative 10, the scales tip over their head.
Chishiya also wins this game, but learns a valuable lesson about humanity and equality in the process. It is shown in flashbacks that when Chishiya began his work as a doctor he was filled with optimism and hope, but this aspect of him slowly faded as he saw how the corrupt and powerful worked. He soon became exactly what he once despised.
In contrast, Kuzuryū stayed true to his principles even after thinking outside the proverbial box and seeing how the world works. During the game, Kuzuryū sacrifices himself for his principles, proving to the other man the importance of personal morality.
Chishiya later meets Arisu and Suguru Niragi. When the latter declares that he wants to play a game with the other two, Chishiya and Arisu have no choice but to shoot back. Chishiya saves Usagi’s life by intercepting the bullet Niragi shot at her. When the King of Spades arrives, Arisu and Usagi hide him and Niragi under the cars.
Despite his gunshot wound, Chishiya is one of the characters to make it out of the frontier alive. He declines the offer to remain as a resident in the Borderlands and wakes up in a hospital bed in the old world. A meteorite appears to have exploded over Tokyo, causing massive structural damage to the city and killing several people. Chishiya is one of the few humans to be revived after being clinically dead for a short period of time. Like everyone who has returned, Chishiya has no memory of what happened, but he and Niragi wake up in bed next to each other knowing that there is animosity between them.
