The third season of The Umbrella Academy is proving to be the most interesting season yet. She doesn’t shy away from increasing the body count, and almost every episode ends with the death of one character or another. The situation is getting so threatening that we’re worried if any of the Umbrella Academy members will say goodbye to us this time. It gets particularly tricky for Luther and Klaus, who are betrayed by the same person in the penultimate episode. What is happening to them? Are they really gone forever? Here’s everything you need to know about them.
Are Luther and Klaus Hargreeves dying?
As the end credits of the final episode of Season 3 roll, Luther and Klaus are seen alive and well, albeit without powers. Although everything seems to have turned out well, they experience a very bloody turn of events. When Reginald Hargreeves fails to win over seven out of nine superheroes in the penultimate episode, he decides to motivate them in a different way. After what appears to be a cordial conversation with Luther, Reginald proves just how ruthless he’s always been. In a shocking turn of events, he kills Luther in the Hotel Obsidian’s White Buffalo Suite.
When the rest of the Academy learns that Luther is dead, Reginald lies that the samurai from the other side of the portal did the deed. The need to avenge Luther spurs the others on, and they decide to enter the portal. However, right before Hargreeves closes the door on the Season 3 timeline, he also leaves Klaus behind, saying he’s more trouble than it’s worth. Despite being heartbroken, Klaus decides not to be taken into the black hole and impales himself on one of the mounted buffalo’s horns.
While the rest of the team tries to figure out how to find the thing that would reset the timeline, we find Klaus and Luther in the afterlife. After being betrayed by Reginald, whom he believed to be better in this timeline, Klaus decides to let go of the living world and is ready to spend the rest of eternity in the afterlife. However, Luther is not prepared to do this. Knowing that Hargreeves has led the rest of his siblings and Sloane on a mission that probably won’t end very well for them, Luther urges Klaus to find a way back.
Previously, Klaus had discovered that he is virtually immortal. Every time he dies, he comes back to life after some time. When Hargreeves finds out, he trains Klaus to return to life of his own accord. Previously, Klaus let time pass, but now he has his powers in check and is able to come back to life just minutes after his death. He uses his powers when Luther tells him they must help the others and ends up in the pocket dimension.
While Klaus can bring himself back to life, he is not yet able to do the same for others, at least not fully. He briefly manages to bring Luther back to life, allowing him to say goodbye to Sloane. When Klaus can’t take it anymore, Luther disappears back into the afterlife. That means Klaus is definitely back, but things aren’t looking so good for Luther. But when the timeline is reset, Luther shows up with the rest of his siblings. Not only is he alive, but he’s back in his original body. The hairy and animal part of him is gone. Klaus also appears alive and well, although he is no longer able to summon spirits like he used to be able to. Even though they lost their powers, Luther and Klaus come out alive in the new timeline.
