According to sources, Criminal Minds Season 16 will air this summer on CBS Network, with filming beginning later this summer. Series producer Paramount+ confirmed the renewal just a year after Criminal Minds Season 15 ended.
That’s not the only good news: Paramount+ has also announced the premiere of a new true crime series, The Real Criminal Minds. So fans can expect a lot in the coming years.
When will Criminal Minds season 16 premiere?
The start date for Criminal Minds season 16 is still unknown for the time being. According to TVLine, as of February 19, 2021, the idea is still in the early stages of development. If Paramount+ and series co-producers CBS Studios and ABC Signature can iron out the technical details, the revival will likely last a year or more.

Although the series ended almost a year ago, several members of the cast and crew have turned to new projects. And since Resurrection seems set to be a continuation of the series, Paramount+ will certainly want to bring on board as many of the series’ leads as possible. One of the show’s leads, who was rumored to be returning, recently threw cold water on the idea of a revival. Paget Brewster shared on Twitter that she thinks the project is dead for now.
That doesn’t preclude an innovative leader at Paramount+ from resuming the project, but it’s not the kind of news fans want to hear.
Which cast members will be returning in Criminal Minds Season 16?
According to TVLine, both familiar faces and new characters will be on the revival’s cast list. But it’s too early to tell who might be interested in returning for another season of Criminal Minds.
Matthew Gray Gubler (Spencer), AJ Cook (JJ), Joe Mantegna (Rossi), Kirsten Vangsness (Garcia), Paget Brewster (Prentiss), Adam Rodriguez (Luke) and Aisha Tyler (Lewis) were among the cast members for the final season of the Series. That doesn’t mean all of the cast would be returning, but it does suggest that at least some of the Season 15 cast would be there. While some episodes end with the characters going their separate ways, Criminal Minds went the opposite way. Garcia was the only team member to leave the series, and she took a job close to her former office (Plus, Luke asked her out on a date, so it’s possible that Vangsness’ favorite character will return).
Shemar Moore, who played the role of Derek Morgan on Criminal Minds from 2005 to 2017 before departing the series to star in his own CBS drama SWAT, is a real hit. Some fans were disappointed that Moore didn’t show up in the last episode (stock videos aside). So if Paramount+ can convince Moore to return for a cameo in the potential resurrection, it will go a long way toward making the new season a must-watch for longtime fans.
