Christine Lady Bird McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) watches as a young man screams out the final notes of Being Alive from Stephen Sondheim’s Company before auditioning for the school musical. I wish I could just experience something, she says wistfully, as she lays her head on the window with her mother a few seconds earlier in the car.

Lady Bird – and the film that bears her name and by Greta Gerwig Written and Directed – is stuck in Sacramento, where she believes there is nothing quite right for her while she pays close attention to what her hometown has to offer. Stephen Sondheim and Greta Gerwig are a natural connection. Few filmmakers can capture the ambiguity and mixed feelings that accompany the refusal to choose: think of 35-year-old Bobby in Company, who impulsively wants to marry a boyfriend but never commits to any of his girlfriends; Cinderella’s hesitation on the castle steps; or Mrs. Lovett’s reluctance to reveal her true motives to Sweeney.
Lady Bird is not as sophisticated as much of Sondheim’s work, but he has a harrowing sincerity that echoes the film’s fears and compassion with equal regularity in the viewer’s heart. Kyle Turner says
The Dog’s Influence (2021)
Jane Campion (director/writer)
Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee star in the film.
The Power of the Dog is a silent, devious film that reveals itself in small, measured glimpses of compassion in a world of roughness, harshness and rawness. Jane Campion’s Oscar nominee is set in Montana in the 1920s. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Phil Burbank, a gruff and angry rancher who doesn’t like his brother’s (Jesse Plemmons) new wife, Rose (Kirsten Dunst), from the start.
This leads to her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) disliking him and desperately trying to protect his mother, setting the stage for interesting, subtle power maneuvers and dynamic shifts as the tumultuous new family tries to come together. Like all Campion films, The Power of the Dog is a tough, often caustic, toxic wave tracking film, with great views and haunting glimpses of small moments of human fragility. The power of the dog isn’t your typical neo-western, so don’t expect standoff scenes or gunfights, but even without those flashy elements, it creates an effect that seems to end with a final blow. Ben Affleck directed the film.

Due to its success, Argo has received more criticism. While Argo didn’t deserve to win ahead of Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, or Django Unchained, it’s far from being a crowd pleaser like The Artist or Green Book. Ben Affleck portrays Tony Mendez, a real-life CIA operation to rescue American embassy staff in Iran. Mendez disguises the prisoners as members of a fictional sci-fi film crew and works with prominent Hollywood figures to make the notion believable. While there are some scenes of unbearable tension, Affleck also throws in a bit of Hollywood sarcasm. Liam Gaughan says

The Online Community (2010)
David Fincher, director
Aaron Sorkin (Author)
The cast includes Jesse EisenbergAndrew Garfield, Armie Hammer, Justin Timberlake and Max Minghella.
At first, The Social Network appeared to be a joke. How could Zodiac and Fight Club director David Fincher produce a film on Facebook when The West Wing writer Aaron Sorkin wrote the script? Yet Jesse Eisenberg plays Mark Zuckerberg in this kind of genesis of the major social media platform, and The Social Network became not only one of Fincher’s best, but one of the best films of the 2010s.
From the pounding soundtrack by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor to the fast-paced dialogue delivered by an amazing cast, everything about The Social Network is perfect. With The Social Network, Fincher took a surprisingly good look at social networks and the closed people who build these virtual worlds. – Bonaire, Ross
