8 shows like The Mindy Project you have to see

January 5, 2023

Created by Mindy Kaling, The Mindy Project follows the successful and irreverent obstetrician-gynecologist Mindy Lahiri as she stumbles through her life, juggling the personal and professional aspects with her weird colleagues. The show gracefully portrays a chubby and curvy woman of Indian origin who dates a string of bachelors and has fun while retaining the audience’s sympathy.

While there is a plethora of TV shows about hopelessly romantic, independent women, few manage to offer a charming and compelling plot and well-rounded characterization that is tight and compelling enough to keep the viewer engaged. If you enjoyed the adventures in Mindy’s life and are looking for similar series to fill the gap, we’ve compiled a list of recommendations you might enjoy. You can watch most of these series like The Mindy Project on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime.

8. The Good Place (2016-2020)

The comedy series The Good Place, created by Michael Schur, is about a woman named Eleanor Shellstrop who finds herself in a heavenly place in her afterlife, not because she deserves it, but because of an identity mistake. All her life she was selfish, mean and morally unfit. Now that she’s in this utopian world, she’s doing whatever it takes to stay there, which means she should actually learn how to be a good person. Like The Mindy Project, this Emmy-winning series is about a strong-willed woman finding her way through an insanely chaotic life – or, in this case, the afterlife.

7. Emily in Paris (2020-)

Emily in Paris follows Emily Cooper, a marketing executive from Chicago who is sent to France by her company to work on their latest acquisition, a renowned French marketing agency dealing in luxury brands. She feels unwelcome in Paris and is nicknamed La Plouc, or backwoods. As the series progresses, Emily becomes embroiled in love affairs, as well as cultural and professional dilemmas.

But the young woman is undeterred by her inhibitions and works with admirable optimism to find a way out. Created by Darren Star, the series is a real comforter with its workplace drama and entertainment value, much like The Mindy Project, not to mention the theme of an independent woman living the life of her dreams.

6. Crashing (2016)

‘Crashing’ is a laughably funny story about six people, most of them in their 20s, who live together as caretakers at a disused hospital, paying a lower rent to keep the house safe under their guidelines. A flamboyant but authentic character, Lulu wades awkwardly through the sexual tensions between her and her childhood friend, now engaged to another woman.

The British series was created by and stars the amazing Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Lulu. It resembles The Mindy Project in its outright irreverence and reckless abandon of the female leads when it comes to their sexual expression, as well as in the amazing chemistry between the unusual performers.

5. The Comeback (2005; 2014)

Starring Lisa Kudrow, who is also the series creator along with Michael Patrick King, The Comeback is a series within a series of the same title. It revolves around Valerie Cherish, who in her youth was a very popular actress on a sitcom called I’m It. Years later, she returns to television, only to find that she doesn’t own the limelight like she used to. Similar to The Mindy Project, the creators give themselves the space they deserve to express themselves.

4. Lady Dynamite (2016-2017)

Lady Dynamite is an absurdly funny autobiographical series – an over-the-top version of comedian Maria Bamford and her resurgence after a nervous breakdown. This hilarious show follows a modern woman’s struggle to find her place in a harsh and unaccommodating world. Created by Pam Brady and Mitch Hurwitz, the series shares the eccentric hilarity of The Mindy Project while following the life of a female protagonist who refuses to confine herself to prevailing social constructs.

3. Jane the Virgin (2014-2019)

Jane the Virgin is considered one of the most heartwarming romantic comedy series. Developed by Jennie Snyder Urman, it is a loose adaptation of Perla Farías’ Venezuelan telenovela of the same name. The series revolves around Jane Gloriana Villanueva, a devout, hard-working Venezuelan-American who is artificially inseminated because of a failing gynecologist.

Worse still, the biological father is her now-married teenage crush and a cancer survivor who lost his last frozen sample in that accident. With her whimsical storytelling, she parodies the overused tropes of Latin American telenovelas. Both Jane the Virgin and The Mindy Project follow the humorous ups and downs of the complicated lives of flawed but confident protagonists.

2. New Girl (2011-2018)

The sitcom New Girl, created by Elizabeth Meriwether, revolves around Jess, a loveable girl who moves into a loft with three odd guys after a heartbreaking breakup. As the story unfolds, the four grow ever closer thanks to their daily interactions and drama. The series’ similarity to The Mindy Project lies in the mad protagonist’s gift for finding herself in chaotic romantic situations.

Additionally, both The Mindy Project and New Girl strive to break free from the network’s comedy formula by taking an ordinary female lead whose character would otherwise be a sidekick and outfitting her with everything a regular romantic comedy snowflake has to offer would.

1.Ugly Betty (2006-2010)

The workplace comedy revolves around a lackluster Mexican-American protagonist with a personal assistant job in the world of fashion journalism. Based on Fernando Gaitán’s Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea, Ugly Betty was developed by Silvio Horta for American audiences. After its release, the series achieved cult status worldwide. While Betty’s characterization as a sweet, hard-working young woman is in no way comparable to Mindy’s, both focus on a career-oriented woman in New York. Both shows have a feel-good factor with a healthy dose of unprecedented humor.
