The 8-part Netflix reality series Pirate Gold of Adak Island takes viewers to the Alaskan island of the same name. In the series, Mayor Thom Spitler hires a group of experts with unique skills to search for pirate captain Gregory Dwargstof’s long-lost treasure. Along with the team of four, Thom explores the country hoping to find gold coins that could be worth more than $350 million.
In the show, the group uses their knowledge of geography and the subsurface to find buried treasure in a race against the inclement weather. Diggers is about two metal detectors, King George Wyant and Tim The Ringmaster Saylor. The series’ strong ties to history and things left behind runs parallel to the Netflix series’ quest, which is prompted by a WWII discovery. For the second season of George and Tim, an archaeologist was even hired to help with the research and explain the significance of the finds.
6. Cooper’s Treasure (2017-2018)
Cooper’s Treasure has an intriguing premise. During a space expedition, astronaut Gordon Cooper notices several anomalies on Earth. He believes they are shipwrecks that may contain loot. After extensive research, Gordon created a treasure map which he shared with professional treasure hunter Darrell Miklos. On the show, Darrell heads to these places to see if they hold any fortune. This show is similar to Pirate Gold of Adak Island in that both are about finding treasures that have been lost over time.
5. The Course of Civil War Gold (2018-2019)
After Confederate President Jefferson Davis was captured by the Union Army’s 4th Cavalry in Michigan in 1865, there were stories of Confederate gold and silver being smuggled into Michigan. A lighthouse keeper later confessed on his deathbed that some of the stolen treasure was loaded onto a railroad car or barge and wheeled into Lake Michigan. As in Pirate Gold of Adak Island, this show brings together a group of experts with different skills to assist in the treasure hunt. These include a metal detective, divers and an underwater archaeologist, among others.
4. The Curse of Oak Island (2014-)
This show follows a team of treasure hunters searching for riches and valuables on Oak Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. The island is known for several stories of buried treasure and artifacts. Like Pirate Gold of Adak Island, this show uses various scientific developments and technologies to aid in the quest for the treasure. Additionally, both shows report on the respective teams dedicated to the task of finding anything that could lead them to these riches in the same place. Over the course of the series’ different seasons, the treasure hunters work on different parts of Oak Island and even find some ancient artifacts.
3.Caribbean Pirate Treasure (2017-2018)
Philippe Cousteau, grandson of the famous French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, takes the lead in this series along with his wife Ashlan, a journalist and environmentalist. In each episode, the Cousteaus uncover a different mystery as they search the waters of the Caribbean for pirate shipwrecks and hopefully uncover some valuable artifacts and riches. Caribbean Pirate Treasure follows the theme of finding pirate loot, which is exactly what the team is trying to find in Adak Island’s pirate gold. In both programs, the experienced explorers are on the search for the legend of the pirate treasure and use all available information from that time.
2. Treasure Quest: Snake Island (2015-2018)
In 1524, a collection of Inca gold called the Treasure of the Trinity was stolen. Over the years, several people have searched for this treasure along the Brazilian coast, but fame has remained elusive. In ‘Treasure Quest: Snake Island’, a group of treasure hunters explore Snake Island, Brazil and, in later seasons, other South American countries. As in the Netflix series, on a remote island, the team of experts must contend with a variety of obstacles before finding their loot. Also, each person featured in Treasure Quest: Snake Island makes a unique contribution with their skills and expertise. In Expedition Unknown, explorer Josh Waters gets to the bottom of various mysteries around the world. On the show, Josh visits various remote areas to uncover iconic legends and explore their connection to local culture. Over the years, Josh has dabbled in things like the lost city of gold of the Incas or Captain Henry Morgan’s loot, but also other stories like the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and the lost Nazi fortune.
