7 Movies Like Elvis You Must See

June 25, 2022

Elvis follows the life and times of the legend Elvis Presley, from his infancy through his meteoric rise to stardom and his slow decline. Told from the perspective of Elvis’ enigmatic and sticky manager, Colonel Tom Parker, the film takes an in-depth look at the icon’s key moments on his rise to stardom.

The film by director Baz Luhrmann, which brings us glitzy musicals like Moulin Rouge! is a true celebration of the life of Elvis Presley, even if the ending isn’t exactly happy. If you’re a fan of musical biographies and love to see their stories transformed into epic drama on screen, we have some great suggestions for you. Most of these movies that are similar to Elvis can be found on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.

7. Straight Outta Compton (2015)

Bringing the explosive history of the West Coast hip-hop scene to the big screen, Straight Outta Compton is an iconic modern music biopic. The film follows hip-hop pioneers NWA and features a dramatized version of rapper Ice Cube. Set in a turbulent time in south Los Angeles, the story hints at broader themes of racism and police brutality. As with Elvis, however, the remarkable story of the musicians who forever changed the face of their genre is central to the narrative.

6. Sid and Nancy (1986)

Based on the obsessive and eventually destructive relationship between Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, this film focuses on a particularly dark story. Set in the brief but bright heyday of the punk movement, the film masterfully chronicles the short-lived punk band’s journey while examining the relationship of the titular couple. With Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb starring as Sid and Nancy, the film’s remarkable story has a fitting cast. Like Elvis, the story of Sid and Nancy is a fantastically told piece of pop culture history.

5. Rocketman (2019)

Produced by the legend himself, Rocketman is the authorized film adaptation of Elton John’s story. The narrative focuses on his meteoric rise to stardom, his subsequent drug crisis, and his return to a healthy life. While Elton John’s later years fall short, the film is a visual extravaganza that does justice to the icon it is about. As you might expect, the narrative is crammed with well-loved musical numbers. Like Elvis, this is the story of a legend lavishly told.

4. Amadeus (1984)

The film Amadeus is set in 18th-century Vienna and tells the remarkable story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Incidentally, much of the story is fictionalized and revolves around the fascinating, decades-long rivalry between Mozart and the Italian composer Antonio Salieri. Widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, Amadeus is a semi-biographical drama that won’t soon be forgotten.

Like Elvis, this film follows the story of the central musician from his young years to his death. Amadeus might as well be at the top of our list, but the long running time and intricate story might be a little too much for those looking for a more compact film.

3.Ray (2004)

Another classic music biography about an icon, Ray chronicles nearly three decades of the life of rhythm and blues artist Ray Charles. From the time he grew up in abject poverty with his mother in Florida, through his early years learning to play the piano, to his later fame, the film provides a number of (partly fictional) details about the eponymous artist. Actor Jamie Foxx received Academy Award for Best Actor, Golden Globe, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards for his role as Ray Charles. Like Elvis, this film tells the story of a remarkable musician and global icon.

‘The Dirt’ follows the story of heavy metal hair glam band Mötley Crüe and takes the group from their early days through a truly explosive journey. The story is an adaptation of the autobiographical book The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band co-written by Neil Strauss with band members Tommy Lee, Mick Mars, Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx. The film pays special attention to the band’s notorious excesses and shows the audience how the band rose to fame. If you enjoyed watching the eponymous icon’s tumultuous behind-the-scenes journey in Elvis, then The Dirt will bring you even more Mötley Crüe dirt.

1. Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

The story of Bohemian Rhapsody is a massive, dazzling saga that pays homage to British rock band Queen and follows Freddie Mercury. As well as dramatically depicting the formation of the iconic band and various highlights including the release of the eponymous theme song, the story also delves into Mercury’s troubled personal life. Rami Malek won an Oscar for his portrayal of the enigmatic frontman, and the film will have you humming Queen songs for days. As an added seal of approval, band members Brian May and Roger Taylor served as consultants on the making of the film.

Bohemian Rhapsody follows the band through the 1970s through to their Live Aid performance in 1985. Fans of Elvis can look forward to an equally lush narrative that showcases all the surreal ups and downs of a music icon. Both films take a lot of artistic liberties with the story of their main characters, but the entertaining results are definitely worth it!
