13 Shows Like House of the Dragon You Must See

Developed by Ryan Condal and George RR Martin, HBO’s House of the Dragon is an action fantasy series. It is based on certain sections of Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood. Set approximately 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, to which it is a prequel and spin-off, the series centers on the brutal civil war between two factions of the ruling Targaryen dynasty. In the history of Westeros, this war of succession is known as the Dance of the Dragons and marks the beginning of the end of Targaryen rule on the continent. If you’ve seen House of the Dragon and liked it, here’s a list of recommendations that might suit your tastes. The Outpost tells the story of Talon, a young woman of the human subspecies known as the Blackblood. When Talon was a child, the people of her village were massacred and she was the only survivor. She swears revenge and embarks on a perilous journey that eventually leads her to an abandoned outpost. With the help of the allies she finds there, Talon tracks down those responsible for the deaths of her family and people. As in House of the Dragon, revenge and its inevitable consequences are a recurring theme in The Outpost.

Based on the fantasy novel series The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind, Legend of the Seeker tells the story of Richard Cypher, a seemingly ordinary young man who learns that he is destined to be the seeker of truth. Richard teams up with Confessor Kahlan Amnell and First Wizard Zeddicus Zu’l Zorander on a life-changing but dangerous journey to change the world and defeat the evil Darken Rahl. While Legend of the Seeker’s story leans more towards traditional fantasy, it contains enough dark and unsettling elements to keep a House of the Dragon fan entertained.

The adaptation of the 1962 Dutch novel classic De brief voor de Koning by Tonke Dragt tells the story of the young aspiring knight Tiuri (Amir Wilson). As he nears the completion of his trials, Tiuri encounters a dying Black Knight who hands him a secret letter and demands that he promise to deliver the letter to the ruler of a kingdom beyond the Great Mountains before the next Fool’s Moon. Often referred to as Game of Thrones for kids, The Letter to the King is a fun and enjoyable film.

Based on Terry Brooks’ The Sword of Shannara trilogy, The Shannara Chronicles tells the story of Wil, Amberle and Eretria – three young people on a quest to save their world. The story takes place in the fictional Four Lands. The ancient and magical tree, the Ellcrys, serves as a locked gateway between the Four Lands and the Forbidden World, the place where the demons of the world were banished. When the Ellcrys begins to die, the heroes must find a way to save him. The last druid Allanon helps them in this task. Like A Song of Ice and Fire, The Sword of Shannara trilogy is an important part of fantasy literature, and The Shannara Chronicles is a fairly decent adaptation of it.

9. The Legend of Vox Machina (2022-)

Developed from the first campaign of the Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role, The Legend of Vox Machina is an adult animated series. Set in the fictional world of Exandria, it revolves around a group of adventurers: the eponymous Vox Machina. Most of the series’ story arcs are based on various story arcs from Critical Role, but there is also some original content. Like House of the Dragon, The Legend of Vox Machina is steeped in violence, sex, magic, and dragons. Also, the entire narrative is built on dark humor, something that doesn’t come up often in this list.

‘Britannia’ is a historical novel series set in the first century AD. When the Romans try to expand their rule on the island of the same name, they encounter fierce resistance from the local kingdoms, tribes and druids. In developing his stories, Martin draws on history, particularly English history. For example, Game of Thrones is loosely based on the 15th-century conflict known as the War of the Roses, while House of the Dragon is partly inspired by the 12th-century civil war known as Anarchy. Although Britannia is set significantly earlier, it features historical elements that Martin introduced into his story flows in and drives to the top.

Kingdom is a gem of a South Korean series that masterfully blends political intrigue with fantasy and horror, just like the series that make up the sprawling Game of Thrones universe. The story takes place in an alternate version of the Joseon Dynasty. Three years have passed since the Imjin War. Lee Chang, Crown Prince and heir apparent, discovers his father’s recent illness is not what it seems. With his life threatened by his political rivals, Lee Chang sets out from the capital to find out the truth and discovers that the dead now walk the earth.

‘The Wheel of Time’ emerged from the book series of the same name by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. Like Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, The Wheel of Time is considered a milestone in fantasy literature. The plot revolves around a group of young men and women living in the remote village of Two Rivers. After the arrival of the Aes Sedai Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), her life changes drastically. As they try to flee the evil that has destroyed their village, they learn that one of them is the Dragon reincarnated, a powerful channeler of the One Power who caused irreparable damage to the world in his previous life.

5. Shadow and Bone (2021-)

The web adaptation of two book series in the Grishaverse by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone tells the story of Alina Starkov, an orphan girl who serves as a cartographer in the First Army of the Ravka Nation, a country modeled after Tsarist Russia. Alina learns that she is a Grisha who practices what is called a minor science, but which people often mistake for magic. Alina also learns that she is a sun summoner, believed to be the only Grisha who can manipulate and summon light. Like House of the Dragon, Shadow and Bone is dark fantasy at its core, drawing heavily on history and real-world politics.

When the creator of the source material is part of the development process, magic happens. It’s the same with House of the Dragon, and it’s the same with The Sandman. Written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg and others, the original comic series was published between January 1989 and March 1996 and ran for 75 issues. In the Netflix series, Dream or Morpheus is the embodiment of dreams and nightmares and one of the Seven Endless along with its siblings – Destiny, Death, Delirium, Desire, Despair and Destruction. After spending 106 years in prison, Morpheus is free again and sets out to fix the things that went wrong in his absence.

The Witcher is based on a series of stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and revolves around three main characters – Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), the eponymous witch, the sorceress Yennefer and the crown princess Ciri of Cintra. Though their beginnings are different, their destinies bring them all together. The story takes place in a world where twisted (in some cases original) versions of fairy tales and folklore are real. The Witchers are hunters of things groping in the dark. From political intrigue to magic to dragons, The Witcher has it all for a House of Dragons fan.

Based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy of the same name, His Dark Materials is a fantasy drama series set in a multi-world reality, with the action switching back and forth between worlds. In one of these worlds, the souls of humans take the form of various animals known as demons. Lyra Belacqua, one of the main characters of the series, is drawn into a war of cosmic proportions. Like The House of the Dragon, His Dark Materials holds a mirror up to the modern world through the metaphors of fantasy, the latter focusing more on organized religion.

Created by David Benioff and DB Weiss, the Game of Thrones series fundamentally changed the perception of fantasy in viewers’ minds and introduced many of us to a subgenre we didn’t even know existed. Game of Thrones, the television adaptation of Martin’s masterpiece A Song of Ice and Fire, is set approximately 200 years after the previous series, after House Targaryen fell. However, the great game for power continues as various other noble houses vie for control of Westeros. Meanwhile, to the east, one of the last surviving members of the ancient dynasty is bringing back the dragons, and to the north, cold winds are howling.
