Is 2 Hearts inspired by a true story?

Yes, 2 Hearts is inspired by a true story. Eric Gregory is actually the father of Christopher Gregory, who really existed and tragically died of a brain aneurysm at the age of 19. Eric wrote his memoirs after the unexpected death of his son, to deal with the situation and celebrate his son’s life. Chris was in his freshman year at Loyola University in New Orleans when he suddenly collapsed at a friend’s house.

After being rushed to Tulane University Medical Center, doctors discovered that he had collapsed from an undetected ruptured brain aneurysm. Chris’s entire family was by his side, including his parents and two older brothers, but tragically he died a few days later.

But the stoy did not end there. Chris signed up for the organ donor registry when he was only 16 years old, and when he died, his organs were donated to five people who desperately needed him. One such person was Jorge Bacardi, a descendant of the legendary rum dynasty. Jorge was born with a lung disease that, at the time, doctors had misdiagnosed as cystic fibrosis.

It’s a miracle that he survived, but as he grew older, it became increasingly difficult to breathe. It wasn’t until he was 50 that doctors determined that he didn’t have cystic fibrosis at all, but rather a rare genetic condition called primary ciliary dyskinesia. His only hope of survival was a double lung transplant. The call that they had found a suitable donor came in March 2008 and hours later Jorge, 64, underwent emergency surgery.

Organ transplant recipients generally never know the names of their donors. But Jorge wrote a letter to his anonymous donor, whom he had named “Gabriel” in honor of the angel, through United Network for Organ Sharing. In 2009, Bacardi finally learned the identity of the teenager who had given Jorge the gift of life. Jorge quickly arranged a meeting with Eric and Grace Gregory, who told him all about their son, who had saved Jorge’s life without even knowing it.
