Post Malone: Runaway review – a strong music documentary you shouldn’t miss

August 11, 2022

The Amazon Freevee Original documentary film Post Malone: Runaway will be released on the streaming service on August 12, 2022.

Post Malone is one of the most interesting characters in the music world in recent years. A brand new documentary is coming to Freevee, Post Malone: fugue, highlighting the rise of the artist. Is it worth checking? Let’s dive into it.

I always watch these documentaries about artists who are still young in their careers with caution because often they haven’t done enough, or their work is only scratching the surface of their accomplishments. However, recently we’ve seen some good documentaries about these young artists, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift and Shawn Mendes, so will this one follow suit? I hope.

In September 2019, Post Malone was on his way to his first-ever US Arena tour. We start the series with a taste of the tour with a performance by Post. With the strobe lights, the big stage, and just a man with a mic, you can’t help but appreciate a man taking the stage without the glare of other things and giving an amazing concert.

I would like to thank director Hector Dockrill and the trio of editors for their work throughout this film. First, Dockrill wisely chose to weave in and out of towns, sprinkling in renditions of Malone’s hit songs along the way, making it an experience. Then I want to credit the editing team for how they edited these things together because the transitions are perfect. We are all the more engulfed throughout the film because what happens behind the camera is as good as what happens in front.

Another thing Dockrill did well was never lose sight of who the movie was about. He got people in and out of the picture and talking about Post Malone, while letting Malone be the star of his own show by also featuring the words that come out of his mouth. I loved going behind the scenes and seeing this humanized version of this massive star.

I mentioned earlier how worried I was about documenting the artists early in their careers, but what Dockrill presented shed some light on Post Malone’s first tour. It was brilliantly staged, showcasing the subject of the documentary, supporting what made him who he was, and not trying to give us everything at once.

All in all, the entire film is a great concert with behind-the-scenes footage following our artist. Honestly, I would love to see more artists doing this kind of documentary on tour. So I suggest you sit back, rock, jam, and watch one of the most remarkable artists of our generation do their thing.
