Marvel Fans Are Losing Their Minds Over The Universe’s Timeline And Continuity

May 11, 2022

Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are no closer to understanding the fast and wobbly nature of Avengers: Endgamewith the nature of Gamora, the fate of Black Widow, and the power of the Infinity Gauntlet still up for debate.

Gamora’s unwilling sacrifice to grant Thanos the Soul Stone in Avengers: Infinity War is very good, because she has the chance to return for Endgame with a version of her from the 2014 timeline. But given that Black Widow makes the sacrifice in Endgame using Time Travel in 2014, fans are confused as to to why she didn’t come back from another timeline.

It’s like that picture of Charlie Day against the taped cork board of Always sunny in Philadelphia. The debate started with a simple question posted on the Marvel Studios subreddit, asking how Gamora and Black Widow died the same way, but only one “returned”.

It occurred to me that Gamora and Natasha died the same way…and yet Gamora is still here via a time travel loophole. Why did Natasha always leave exactly, in-universe? by Marvel Studios

The discussion on the subreddit has gotten mind-blowing and very confusing – and frankly, you might need your own red string to tie up all those moving parts.

Then the discussion turned to whether Gamora is still the same Gamora, turning the conversation into an example that proved pivotal to Vision’s character development in Wanda Vision.

If you need a little break to recover, now is the time to take it.

In the most blunt way, it probably doesn’t really matter. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will both feature Zoe Saldana as Gamora, but figuring out which Gamora timeline they’ll include may require a rocket scientist.

The good news is that characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe are also learning how the multiverses, timelines, and universes work, so we’re not alone as an audience.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the latest entry in Marvel’s multiverse shenanigans arc and is currently in theaters.
