Impressive DIY sci-fi that launched careers is escorted to the streaming ranks

One of Hollywood’s favorite practices in recent years is to pick filmmakers who have only a handful of lo-fi indie credits under their belt and cast them as the helm of big-budget studio-backed blockbusters. . The results have been hit and miss so far, but Gareth Edwards Monsters leads to a leap that can be described as suitably impressive.

Made for just $500,000, the enterprising Edwards wore many hats during the development, filming and post-production process serving as writer, director, visual effects artist, production designer and director of photography. The final product may have only made $4.2 million at the box office, but it was still enough to turn a net profit and act as one hell of a business card.
