During a visit to the vet, Gonker is diagnosed with a serious medical condition requiring an injection every 30 days to prevent life-threatening complications. Ginny is traumatized by a childhood experience involving a pet. As an adult, she can never shake off the guilt and anger of the incident, which is brought to even more light after Gonker’s disappearance. Likewise, Fielding and John’s strained relationship is a perfect example of how, in certain situations, a crisis can bring people together again.

Gonker’s disappearance, while devastating, forces father and son to reconnect, and seeing it all unfold on screen is beautiful to watch.

It wasn’t until Fielding and John spent more time together that Fielding’s father recognized his admirable traits. missing dog also shows Fielding’s commitment, dedication and passion for Gonker and the strength of the bond between a dog and its owner. If you’re a dog owner, you’ll no doubt understand Fielding’s position. Each passing day without Gonker is heartbreaking, although the family still holds glimmers of hope, and as a viewer you are emotionally drawn in and can feel their longing and pain.

Director Stephen Herek does a fantastic job of capturing the sentimental moments between family members, especially when it comes to the interactions between John and Fielding. The camera’s close-ups give father and son a moment to shine, and even when the wilderness surrounds the couple, there’s still an intimacy between the two that feels genuine and heartfelt.

Rob Lowe, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, and Berchtold’s performances reflect the emotional turmoil the family goes through as they wish for Gonker’s return, and the hope reflected through each character hits the mark. There are some whimsical moments in the film accompanied by cheesy dialogue, but should we expect any less from a feel-good family film?
