This review of the Paramount Most Significant Other movie contains no spoilers.
My half, jointly led by Dan Berk and Robert Olsenis a startling sci-fi horror starring Maika Monroe (of It follows fame) and Jacques Lacy (famous for The White Lotus). The film is about a couple, Ruth and Harry, on a hike who find themselves facing perils far beyond a failed proposal. Within the first few minutes, we get a sense of who Ruth and Harry are as a couple. They are clearly very much in love, but Ruth’s anxiety seems to hamper their relationship. From the start, she is uncomfortable with the idea of hiking deep in the woods, but is reassured by her boyfriend, who promises to protect her.
Sunk in the middle of the thick woods, My half does a great job of creating suspense. There is a constant tension between the two protagonists, every line of dialogue seems to have a hidden meaning, yet the story is structured in such a way that it leaves enough room for ambiguity until the big reveal. The suspenseful atmosphere, coupled with excellent use of foreshadowing, provides an exciting viewing experience with satisfying payoff.
The two protagonists do an excellent job as a young couple out of their depths. Jake Lacy is very compelling as a loving, supportive boyfriend with an understated sinister undertone, while Maika Monroe’s portrayal of a young woman paralyzed by her anxiety has some depth.
This movie does a lot of things right. It is located in the beautiful setting of the Pacific Northwest. There are enough plot twists to keep the viewer on the edge of their seat for the duration of the run. The few bits of comedic release interspersed cut the tension just enough to allow the viewer to breathe a little. And the ending is as thrilling as it is terrifying. Since the trailer doesn’t reveal much, as long as you avoid spoilers, every reveal will come as a real surprise.
My half is a well-packaged little horror film. It strays from conventional storytelling and delivers its touch neatly wrapped in sci-fi ribbon. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, making it a fun, fresh, and exciting offering for this October.
