November 30, 2021

This review of the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible is spoiler-free.

“Sometimes the idea that you come up with may seem impossible to the rest of the world, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to you. “ – Nirmal Purja

The Netflix Documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible is the story of making possible what seems impossible. The story of Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja and his unbeatable courage to dream big is as inspiring as it is exhilarating.

The documentary captures the story of Nims’ “Possible Project” to reach the highest peaks in the world, at more than 8,000 meters. An impossible task, which takes climbers several years, Nims has set himself the goal of becoming the fastest to complete in 7 months. And he did it with his team, Mingma David, Geljen Sherpa, Lakpa Dendi and Gesman Sherpa in 6 months and 6 days, breaking 6 mountaineering world records.

In addition to an overwhelming story to see, this documentary explores the hard truths of the mountaineering profession, especially for those in Eastern Europe. In terms of funding or advertising, the Eastern Highlanders do not receive much support.

It is an irony that all Westerners come to the East to reach the top of these highest peaks with the help of the Orientals (Nepalese Sherpas), but they (the Orientals) are not recognized. In a startling dialogue, Nims quoted when Westerners gathered at the summit, they said they had succeeded with the help of their sherpas. They often forget to mention their names.

This is also the point for Nims. Being Nepalese, he understands discrimination and is saddened by it. He wanted this recognition for the Orientals, especially the Nepalese, which they deserve. So, he planned this monumental task to achieve the impossible above all Westerners.

In this process, he faced both physical and mental suffering. He had to quit his job in the military, his mother sick when she needed him most, even had to remortgage her house to finance the project. But as a Gurkha, losing or giving up is not in her blood. With steely determination and indomitable enthusiasm and courage, he finally achieved his goal.

In the perspective of making this documentary, also produced by Nims, is nothing new in terms of convention. It has the old techniques of interviews, stock footage and commentary. But this is the story that had to be told. And to understand the enormous effort behind this epic journey and a madman’s exhilarating dream, one must absolutely watch this documentary.
