The term “canon” means that a story takes place in the same universe as all the others and that its events can have a lasting impact on the overall narrative of a shared universe. In essence, canon stories will continue, while non-canon stories often won’t.
But MODOK, Marvel Television’s new animated series on Disney Plus, certainly does it is not part of the MCU. Jordan Blum has confirmed that the series takes place in its own universe. He said, “Marvel has a kind of database of all the universes in the multiverse, and there’s a guy who takes care of that and lets me choose the numbering of our universe. My son’s birthday, 12/26, is our universe, so we were in the Marvel Multiverse, which is great. ” So it seems that MODOK takes place on Earth-1226, away from Earth-616 (the comics) or Earth-199999 (the MCU).
In fact, a series like MODOK it can thrive precisely because it has no lasting impact on a shared universe. This gives the writers enormous creative freedom and they can bring in famous characters like Iron Man and Thor without having to worry about how their series fits into the overall continuity. A story does not count because of its place in relation to other movies and television series, but because of its own quality and effectiveness of the characters.
Although Patton Oswalt is interested in the role of MODOK in live action in the MCU. This is unlikely to happen anytime soon. In the past, Marvel Studios used to pass characters to Marvel Television when they had no interest in developing them.
