More information about Higurashi When They Cry SOTSU
The story takes place in Higurashi, the fictional town of Hinamizawa, in June 1983. Shion’s twin brother Mion Sonozaki, Rena Ryg, Rika Furude, and a family classmate, Satoko Hj, are familiar faces. For Keiichi Maebara, who recently moved. to town. Keiki will soon learn of the village’s annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration that honors and thanks the local deity, Oyashiro. Hinamizawa seems calm and quiet at first, but Keiichi quickly discovers that people have been killed or missing on the night of the festival for the past four years in a row.
These crimes having not been clarified, the inhabitants nicknamed them the “curse of Oyashiro”. The day after the festival, police discover the body of Jir Tomitake, a freelance photographer, and the charred body of Miyo Takano, a clinic nurse. Keiichi tries to investigate Oyashiro’s curse in various sections, only to become paranoid and commit a crime, usually the murder of someone in the circle. Rika’s body is discovered in the Oyashiro Family Hall a few days after the festival, and the village population is swept away by the cataclysmic release of gas from the swamp on the same day.
Each arc that led to Rika’s attempts to save her own life, according to the response arcs, represented a different reality. As a priestess of the Furude Shrine, she can communicate with the spirit of Rika Hany, the prototype of Ojashiro and the ancestor of the Furude clan. Hany transports Rika to another reality after her death so that her situation can change. Rika retains the memory of all past events except the last minute of her life, preventing her from determining the cause of her fate. Some of the above crimes have been committed against Miyo, who is investigating a local endemic parasitic disease in the village and using the Oyashiro curse as cover in the Minagoroshi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen chapters.
The disease is present in people who move away from “the queen of infections”, or in extremely stressed people who release a pheromone that prevents the situation of the locals from deteriorating. Infected people gradually lose health and commit suicide by slitting their throats. All the women of the Furude clan have served as queens of the infection, and Rika is the sole survivor of her clan after the death of her parents.
